History/Overview

Since 2017, Kia has marketed its Niro to drivers seeking a practical compact vehicle with electrified powertrains. The hybrid version you’re reading about here is only one third of the puzzle, the rest of which consists of plug-in hybrid and fully electric versions that are covered in separate buyer’s guide entries.

What’s New/Key Changes From Last Year

For 2023, the Niro enters its second generation with more interesting styling, though the car’s basic station wagon-esque shape is carried over.

Available Trims

Kia offers the Niro in LX, EX, EX Premium, and SX trim levels. In all, a 1.6L gas engine works with an electric motor and a six-speed transmission to power the front wheels.

Standard Features

LX trim comes with 16-inch wheels, halogen headlights, heated front seats, air conditioning, an 8.0-inch touchscreen, and six-speaker audio. The basic safety suite comprises forward collision mitigation, blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane keep/follow assist, and rear occupant alert.

EX adds roof rails, a heated steering wheel, a 10.25-inch touchscreen with navigation, passive keyless entry, wireless phone charging, junction turning assist, adaptive cruise control, highway driving assist, and rear parking sensors.

EX Premium gains a sunroof, hands-free tailgate, a power driver’s seat with lumbar, and LED interior lighting.

Finally, SX models get 18-inch wheels, LED headlights/fog lights, rain-sensing wipers, leather upholstery, ventilated front seats with power passenger adjustments, upgraded audio, a head-up display, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and front parking sensors.

Competition

The Niro is a bit of an outlier in today’s marketplace thanks to its station wagon shape. It’s closest – albeit much different looking – competitors are the Toyota Prius, Honda Accord Hybrid, and Toyota Camry Hybrid.

Issue: 
On certain vehicles, the wiring under the front passenger seat may not have been routed correctly. As a result, the wiring could become damaged when the seat is moved. If this happens, the airbags and seat belt pretensioners may not work and/or the airbag system may not turn off the passenger-front airbag when an infant or child seat is in the front passenger seat. This problem could also cause the passenger side seat airbag to inflate unexpectedly. 
Note: This recall only affects vehicles equipped with a manual front passenger seat. This recall also affects Niro hybrid and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) models. 

Safety Risk: 
Airbags and/or seat belt pretensioners that don't work properly could increase the risk of injury in a crash. Additionally, an airbag that deploys without a crash could create a risk of injury. 

Corrective Actions: 
Kia will notify owners by mail and advise you to take your vehicle to a dealership to inspect and, if necessary, replace the wiring under the front passenger seat. The dealer will also reroute and install covers to protect the wiring.

Issue: 
On certain vehicles, the compliance label may be missing information in French. The words listed on the label for "Tires", "Rims", "Front" and "Rear" appear in English only, when they should be listed as "Tires/Pneus", "Rims/Jantes", "Front/Avant" and "Rear/Arriere". Canadian regulations require this information to be listed on the label in both English and French. 

Safety Risk: 
These small errors do not affect vehicle safety. 

Corrective Actions: 
This is not a recall. Kia has corrected the compliance label for all new vehicles.

Issue: 
On certain electric vehicles, an axle shaft may not have been manufactured properly. As a result, the axle shaft could break and cause a loss of power to the wheels. 
Note: For the Niro EV model, the left-front axle shaft is affected. For the EV6 model, the inner-rear axle shaft is affected.

Safety Risk: 
A loss of power to the wheels could increase the risk of a crash. 

Corrective Actions: 
Kia will notify owners by mail and advise you to take your vehicle to a dealership to replace the axle shaft.

On certain vehicles, the instrument cluster screen could remain blank when the vehicle is started. If this happens, you may not be able to see certain information about the vehicle, including the odometer, warnings, and malfunction tell-tale graphics.

Warnings and malfunction tell-tale information that doesn't display could increase the risk of a crash.  
 
Corrective Actions:  
Kia will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealership to update the instrument cluster software.
