2017 Hyundai Elantra GT

While Hyundai's Elantra sedan has just been redesigned for model year 2017, it'll be at least another year before the hatchback GT version receives a major update. And that's OK given that the current model is competitive, practical and was just updated last year with new front-end styling and additional levels of standard equipment.

The big change for model year 2017 is the consolidation of trim levels. The base L has been nixed, while there's a new SE trim that replaces the standard GLS. The GLS Tech still exists, though, as does the high-zoot Limited trim.

Unusually, with the exception of Space Black Pearl, every single colour on the GT is new. The range now includes Marina Blue, Fiery Red, Platinum Silver, Moon Light Blue, Star Gazing Blue, Polar White, and Iron Grey.

While Hyundais aren't typically lauded for their engines, all Elantra GTs come standard with a 2.0-litre direct-injected four-cylinder that punches well above its weight. Its standard 173 hp and 154 lb-ft of torque gives it plenty of pep. It has more standard power than the Corolla iM, Cruze Hatchback, and Lancer Sportback, and is on par with the range-topping turbocharged engines found in the Civic Hatchback, Mazda3, and Volkswagen Golf.

The standard transmission is a six-speed manual for the base GL; a six-speed automatic is standard on all others. Both manual and automatic models are rated at 9.8 L/100 km city, with the manual version being rated at 7.1 L/100 km highway. The automatic uses slightly more gasoline at 7.2.

As with all Hyundais, standard equipment levels are generous and include a six-speaker audio system with USB port, Bluetooth, power exterior mirrors, keyless entry, heated front seats, automatic headlights, cruise control, steering-wheel mounted audio controls, tilt and telescoping steering column, rear spoiler, and air conditioning. All models also have a driver-selectable steering mode which changes the weight of the car’s steering.

Further up on the food chain, 16- and 17-inch wheels are available, as is a power driver's seat, panoramic glass sunroof, reverse camera, proximity key with push-button start, navigation, and leather-upholstered seats. Features such as radar cruise control, emergency autonomous braking, blind-spot monitoring and lane departure warning are currently not available.

Pricing for the Elantra GT GL starts at $19,999 with the Limited trim level selling for $26,249.
