appleappletwo Owner of two Imprezas June 06, 2018 Base Hatchback Trim w.t. Manual Transmission
Overall Score
I owns two Impreza of 2012 (CVT) and 2017 (Manual) models. Both bought at brand new and kept up with the manufacture suggested maintenance schedule. This review is for the 2017 model that I bought about 8 month ago.In short, I am happy about buying the Impreza again. I use the 2017 Manual mainly as an A to B car, half high-way and half city. The fuel mileage is about 7.6L/100 at summer and 8.5 in winter time (I usually do not push my car to that 4000rmp power band). The road noise is substantially reduced from the 2012 model I owned. The hatchback version has great space for legs and cargo, fits in almost all the time the furniture we got from IKEA, and meet needs of my family of 4 all the time. The driving is solid and under control. The sound system is a good thumb up v.s. my old 2012 model. Back camera is by default. As for the cons, the interior detailing and finishing (made in USA) is a down grade v.s. the 2012 model (made in Japan). The buttons and turning knobs etc. feels cheep and badly assembled. When closing the door, you feel the material tends to be dragged apart from the door's body. The touch screen radios system is kind of a joke, constantly reset so I lost all the saved programs, audio is forced turned on when you start the engine. Bluetooth lost connection from time to time when my phone is at passage seat. And no firmware upgrades what so ever from the manufacture.

Issue: On certain vehicles, the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve could fail. If you continue to operate the vehicle after this happens, pieces of the PCV valve may enter the engine and cause an engine failure. Safety Risk: A sudden loss of engine power could increase the risk of a crash. Corrective Actions: Subaru will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to replace the engine short block assembly.

Issue: On certain vehicles, the engine control unit (ECU) may have been programmed incorrectly. As a result, the internal temperature of the ignition coils may increase. This could cause a short circuit and a blown fuse. This may result in a sudden loss of engine power with an inability to restart. Safety Risk: A sudden loss of engine power could increase the risk of a crash. Corrective Actions: Subaru will notify owners by mail and instruct them to take their vehicle to a dealer to reprogram the ECU and inspect the ignition coils. If ignition coil damage is found, the ignition coil will be replaced. On vehicles with ignition coil damage, if a certain trouble code (DTC) is stored, the front exhaust pipe will also be replaced.

On certain vehicles, due to software programming within the engine control unit, the operating threshold of the radiator fan used to cool the fuel temperature is not set low enough for the fan to operate at an appropriate temperature when using winter blend fuels. This could result in the fuel vaporizing prematurely under certain outside temperatures and driving conditions, which could cause a decrease in fuel pressure. If this occurs, the engine may stall in certain circumstances while the vehicle is in motion, including low speed, stop-and-go traffic, or at a stop and may not be able to be restarted immediately, which could increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or property damage. Correction: Dealers will reprogram the engine control unit with new software.

On certain vehicles, the rear view camera image may not display properly due to a software issue within the infotainment unit. During the initial boot-up, a blank screen might occur, or if multiple processes occur at the same time, the screen might freeze. This could increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property while reversing. Correction: Dealers will reprogram the software of the infotainment unit.
