The car we know as the Genesis G90 started its life in Canada as the Hyundai Equus. That was before the Korean company spun its Genesis models (at the time, a sports coupe and a mid-size sedan) into a separate premium brand.
This year marks the third model year for Genesis's flagship model. The G90 is unchanged for 2019, and is available in two trims built around a pair of different engines.
The 3.3T AWD model uses a 3.3L turbocharged V6 that makes 365 hp and 376 lb-ft of torque, an eight-speed automatic transmission and AWD. The 5.0 model instead gets a 5.0L V8 (420 hp/383 lb-ft) mated to the same transmission and AWD setup.
With the G90, Genesis is out to prove it can build a big sedan to compete with established models like the BMW 7 Series, Mercedes-Benz S-Class and Audi A8. We're not here to judge whether it succeeds in that effort, but suffice it to say this is a 10-year-old design and is probably better considered for its excellent value rather than the finer points of its performance and luxury finishes.
Notably, Genesis will redesign the G90 for 2020.
Standard features in the 3.3T trim include 19-inch wheels, lane keep assistance, blind spot detection, rear cross traffic alert, lane change assist, adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, multi-view exterior camera system, LED headlights with cornering lights and automatic high beams, Nappa leather seating, a 12.3-inch navigation display with multimedia controller and a 17-speaker sound system. There's also a 22-way adjustable driver's seat and a 16-way front passenger seat with heat and ventilation for both, passive keyless entry, power sunshades for the rear side windows and back window, power trunk and a head-up display.
The 5.0 model's notable comfort and convenience additions include power-adjustable rear outboard seats (14-way on the right, 12-way on the left) with ventilation. The only option here is a rear-seat entertainment system.
Genesis's fuel consumption estimates for the G90 are 13.7/9.7 L/100 km (city/highway) for the 3.3T model, and 15.2/10.2 L/100 km with the 5.0L engine.
