History/Overview
The BMW M4 is the brand’s ultimate expression of compact coupe performance, designed to move quickly enough so that onlookers won’t have time to notice the car’s questionable front-end styling.
What’s New/Key Changes From Last Year
For 2023, BMW has added a CSL configuration to the M4 coupe that is more powerful and lighter for more focused track performance.
Available Trims
BMW offers the M4 in base, Competition and CSL configurations, all powered by a 3.0L twin-turbo six-cylinder engine. The Competition model is also available as a convertible. The base car comes with a six-speed manual transmission and rear-wheel drive, while all others get an eight-speed automatic and AWD.
Standard Features
The base M4 coupe and M4 Competition coupe and convertible gets staggered 19-inch front and 20-inch rear wheels, leather upholstery, a heated steering wheel, sport differential, adaptive suspension, passive keyless entry, auto-dimming/power-folding mirrors, heated front seats with memory, front and rear parking sensors, automatic A/C, automatic high beams, satellite radio, and digital gauges. Also included is the driving assistant suite of safety features.
The M4 CSL gets serious weight-saving measures, including the removal of the rear seats. It also gains structural enhancements, a sport transmission, carbon ceramic brakes, full carbon fibre seats, a head-up display, wireless phone charging, Alcantara steering wheel trim, blind spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, and rear collision prevention.
Key Options
A premium package adds a power trunk, drive recorder, laser headlights, surround sound stereo, and surround-view cameras. An M carbon package brings carbon fibre trim and carbon fibre seats.
The CSL’s only options are removal of the car’s standard red exterior trim, and different carbon fibre front seats.
Fuel Economy
BMW’s fuel consumption estimates for the M4 are 14.7/10.1 L/100 km (city/highway) for the base model; 14.6/10.5 L/100 km for the Competition coupe and 15.1/10.4 for Competition cabrio models; and 15.0/10.3 L/100 km for the CSL package.
Competition
The speedy M4 competes primarily against the Mercedes-AMG C 63 coupe, and Audi RS5. The new CSL extra power and lack of rear seating expands the car’s competitive set to include models like the Chevrolet Corvette, the Porsche 911, and Shelby and Mach 1 versions of the Ford Mustang.
