Old-Gen Ram 1500 Returns as 1500 Classic

The Ram 1500 is getting a new badge for 2019, to make sure buyers know which 2019 is which.

Ram has introduced an all-new 1500 pickup for 2019, but until all the trims roll out they're going to keep selling the old truck. To help you know which one you're looking at, or talking about, Ram is pulling out an old trick. The pickup you know as the 2018 Ram 1500 will be badged Classic for 2019.

It's mostly the same truck as 2018, with the Classic badge to tell you that you're not talking about the all-new 2019 model. Or to use chassis codes, to help you distinguish between the new DT truck and the old DS model.

The 1500 Classic is aimed at budget conscious buyers. Ram Boss Mike Manley called it "targeted at entry and commercial buyers." So it will be available in ST, Tradesman, Express, SLT, and SSV trims. No Big Horn or Laramie luxury trucks. Want one of those, you'll want the 2019 1500 not the Classic.

It will be available in 4x2 and 4x4 drivelines, with the 3.6L V6 and 5.7L Hemi V8. The 3.0L V6 diesel goes away but is expected to come back. Ram says it'll be available at a later date. Regular, Quad and Crew cabs are also available.

The 2019 Ram 1500 Classic will be available in the fourth quarter of this year, but the similar  2018 Ram 1500 is being sold right now with heavy discounts next to the all-new 2019 Ram 1500 model.
