Sleek 2019 Kia Forte Bows at Detroit Show

Kia has pulled the cover off of an all-new Forte compact sedan. It has a Stinger-inspired design with more connectivity and improved powertrains.

The new Forte wears Kia's corporate grille well, flanked by pulled-back headlights that echo the Stinger sport sedan. The long, sloping roofline into a short rear deck does the same, and it makes for a refined look for a car this small.

The car has been stretched 81 mm, for a total length of 4,641 mm. That means more legroom and a larger trunk. The Forte gets 13 mm wider and 18 mm taller, putting those dimensions at 1,798 and 1,440 mm respectively.

The 2019 Forte adds more high-strength steel for more strength and less weight. The same has been applied to the seat frames which has the added benefit of increasing usable interior space. The dash layout helps add to the sense of increased space. Kia said that the increased stiffness also helps to make the cabin quieter.

The engine is a new version of Kia's 2.0L four. It now has more efficient Atkinson Cycle tech and a cooled EGR system. It can be paired with a six-speed manual or a new type of CVT Kia calls an "Intelligent Variable Transmission." The new engine makes 147 hp and 132 lb-ft of torque, the same as the old model. Fuel economy is expected to rise, with official ratings closer to the on-sale date.

Kia's new IVT transmission is a continuously variable design that uses a first-in-class chain drive instead of a push belt. Kia says that this reduces the rubber-band effect and drone of the CVT, providing a better experience. Kia has also added more sound insulation to the transmission to quiet it further.

The new Forte will have a standard 8.0-inch touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity. It can also read and reply to SMS via Bluetooth with some phones, removing the need to plug the phone in. There will also be an available wireless charging tray. Kia will also have an available Harman Kardon 320-watt audio system available.

The Forte has new driver assistance systems that include blind spot warnings, lane keeping assist, forward collision avoidance, and radar cruise control.

The 2019 Kia Forte will make its Canadian debut this weekend at the Montreal auto show and is expected to go on sale later this year.
