Volvo introduced the 2018 S90 to North America today at the New York International Auto Show, which will bring a longer wheelbase and a broader range of powertrain options to Canada.
The latest generation of S90 was first launched here as a 2016 model with 911 mm of rear leg room and only the T6 engine available. For 2018, rear leg room will increase to 1,026 mm – a figure that Volvo says is a segment leader by approximately 7.5 cm – and the wheelbase goes up by 12 cm. This additional length makes it possible for the panoramic sunroof from the XC90 to be integrated as a standard feature.
Volvo will also add two more engines to its S90 offerings. On top of the 316 hp turbo- and supercharged T6 2.0L four-cylinder Drive-E engine already available, buyers can opt for the T5, a turbo-only mill that’s also a 2.0L four-cylinder and puts out 250 hp, or the T8 plug-in hybrid system that delivers a total of 400 hp. In Canada, all models will come with standard all-wheel drive.
The 2017 models will be the last with the shorter wheelbase. Once they disappear from dealerships, only the new longer-wheelbase S90 will be available. (In other words, if you’ve been thinking about buying one and you like your sedans on the smaller side, now’s the time to pick one up.)
The 2018 Volvo S90 will begin arriving in Canadian dealerships in the second half of the year with pricing to be announced closer to launch.
