Mercedes Promises Maybach SUV

Mercedes-Benz CEO Dieter Zetsche says a Maybach SUV is coming, according to a Detroit auto show report from the U.K.'s AutoExpress magazine.

While another company exec told AutoExpress that a Mercedes-Maybach SUV creates an opportunity to create a stand-alone signature model, it was later revealed the super-posh utility would effectively be stretched and rebodied version of the Benz GLS-Class three-row model.

Benz said the new SUV would reflect the Maybach division's "modern" approach to luxury, compared to the more traditional approach taken by other luxury competitors.

The German luxury car maker said Maybach will also electrify future models -- like, perhaps, whatever comes of the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 -- but wasn't specific about whether an electric (or hybrid) utility would be part of that picture.

As for when Maybach's first SUV will come to market, Zetsche told reporters in Detroit simply, "I'd like to say you will be seeing it, but I'll leave it at that."
