Ford Offers to Install a Charger in EV Buyers’ Homes for Free

Ford offers free home charging unless you happen to live in Quebec.

For a limited time, Ford will offer to install a charger in the homes of anyone who buys one of its eligible electric vehicles (EVs). The automaker says it’s offering this service in order to help consumers find “peace of mind.”

The offer will only be available for a limited time, and there are some limitations. For instance, Canadian shoppers in all provinces and territories will be eligible for the promotion, except those in Quebec. Instead, they’ll have to settle for a discount — standard installation is worth $3,600, but Ford will do it for $2,450.

In addition, the free at-home charger is only being offered to people who buy a Ford F-150 Lightning, Mustang Mach-E, or E-Transit between Feb. 1 and March 31. The actual installation will be done by RocketEV, Ford's Canadian charger installation partner.

This promotion may help consumers who are on the fence about buying an EV while the federal incentive program for zero-emissions vehicles (iZEV) is on pause. While Ford offered a rebate of as much as $5,000 on the purchase of its EVs in the wake of the announcement that the funds in the iZEV program had been fully allocated, that was only for buyers who bought an EV between Jan. 13 and 21.

A free at-home charger may be even more important to EV owners than a discount, though. In a recent study, J.D. Power found that installing a Level 2 charger at home is one of the biggest choices American EV owners can make to improve their ownership experience.

While access to charging stations on the road remains an important factor for EV owners (and one in need of improvement), those who charge at home save money and can avoid charging in public for the most part.

The limited-time program is part of the Ford Power Promise, which also includes 24-hour-a-day live support, an eight-year battery warranty, and seamless payment for on-the-road charging.
