Best Subcompact SUVs to Buy in 2026
The Subaru Crosstrek is the best subcompact SUV to buy in 2026. It won the AutoTrader Awards title for Best Subcompact SUV for the fourth year in a row, and every trim comes with all-wheel drive.
The Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid is the most fuel-efficient of our five picks at 5.6 L/100 km, while the Hyundai Kona has the lowest starting price of our five picks in AutoTrader Research data, at $26,749.
Key Takeaways
- The Subaru Crosstrek won the 2026 AutoTrader Awards Best Subcompact SUV title for the fourth straight year; its new hybrid makes 194 hp.
- The Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid AWD carries the lowest Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) combined rating of the five at 5.6 L/100 km, about 31 per cent below the gas Crosstrek's 8.1.
- The Hyundai Kona Essential FWD has our lowest starting MSRP in AutoTrader Research data, $26,749, and the Kona alone comes as gas, turbo N Line and electric.
- Only the Crosstrek makes AWD standard. On the Kona, Kicks, Taos, and gas Corolla Cross, all-wheel drive adds $1,400 to $2,300 to the base trim's MSRP in AutoTrader Research data.
Who This Guide Is For: Is the Subcompact SUV Segment Right for You?
For many new car buyers, subcompact SUVs offer available all-wheel drive, good fuel economy, and decent practicality at an affordable price. It's one of Canada's most popular segments. It suits you if you want a crossover's ride height in a smaller footprint.

Our Picks: The 5 Best Subcompact SUVs for 2026
Our panel of more than 20 experts weighed fuel efficiency, practicality, technology, and value across this segment, from the Chevrolet Trax to the Kia Seltos. These five stood out.
Subaru Crosstrek and Crosstrek Hybrid
The 2026 AutoTrader Awards Best Subcompact SUV is the Subaru Crosstrek, claiming the crown for the fourth year in a row.
The new hybrid pairs an efficiency-tuned 2.5-litre flat-four with a 1.1-kWh battery. The result is 194 hp and a combined rating of 6.5 L/100 km, about 20 per cent less fuel than the gas model, which makes 180 hp and 178 lb-ft of torque.
Standard all-wheel drive is the Crosstrek's trump card. Subaru's system always sends at least 40 per cent of its power to the rear wheels, which our experts say helps stability and handling even on dry roads. EyeSight, with adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist, comes on every trim, and its camera sits inside the windshield.
The cabin is roomy and the seats comfortable. Some rivals offer more cargo volume, but the squared-off cargo area is easy to load. Heated seats are standard; upper trims add an 11.6-inch touchscreen and blind-spot monitoring.
AutoTrader Research lists the 2026 Crosstrek from $30,595 (Convenience) to $40,595 (Limited). For 2027, Subaru lists 1,549 L of cargo space, or 1,433 L in the hybrid, about 7 per cent less.

Toyota Corolla Cross and Corolla Cross Hybrid
The Corolla's reputation for practicality and reliability carries over here. The gas model uses a 2.0L four-cylinder making 169 hp. The hybrid uses a similar engine with electric motors for 196 hp, the most of any gasoline-burning pick on this list.
The hybrid is the standout for fuel economy. NRCan rates the Corolla Cross Hybrid AWD at 5.6 L/100 km combined, against 7.4 for the gas FWD model and 7.8 with AWD. AutoTrader Research lists the L from $28,830 and the hybrid from $36,160 (SE AWD) to $38,985 (XSE AWD). Our experts liked its easy infotainment and safety features.

Hyundai Kona and Kona Electric
The Hyundai Kona is one of the most affordable subcompact crossovers in Canada. AutoTrader Research lists the Essential at $26,749 with front-wheel drive, and AWD adds $2,000. Power comes from a 2.0L four-cylinder making 147 hp and 132 lb-ft through a continuously variable transmission (CVT), rated at 7.6 L/100 km with FWD and 8.5 to 8.6 with AWD.
The Kona is the only SUV here with a dedicated performance model. The N Line uses a turbocharged 1.6L making 190 hp, about 29 per cent more than the base engine, with standard AWD and an eight-speed automatic. It starts at $36,699.
Then there's the Kona Electric: a 201-hp motor drives the front wheels, and NRCan rates its range at 420 km. Fast charging is slowish.
Nissan Kicks
The Nissan Kicks was redesigned for 2025, making it one of the newest models here. Top trims get a panoramic sunroof, dual 12.3-inch displays, and headrest speakers.
Every Kicks uses a 2.0L four-cylinder making 141 hp and 140 lb-ft, with a CVT. AutoTrader Research lists the 2026 Kicks S from $27,198 with FWD; AWD adds $2,300, and the SR tops the range at $33,748.
For 2027, Nissan lists 677 L of cargo space behind the rear seats, 1,419 L folded (for the AWD). NRCan rates it at 7.4 L/100 km with FWD and 7.8 with AWD, only about 5 per cent more. It's slightly cheaper than some rivals. Our experts liked its styling and bold colours.
Volkswagen Taos
Volkswagen refreshed the Taos for 2025 with a turbocharged 1.5L making 174 hp and 184 lb-ft. It's one of the few subcompact SUVs with an eight-speed automatic instead of a CVT.
AutoTrader Research lists the Trendline from $30,595 with FWD. AWD (4Motion) adds $2,000, and the Highline tops out at $39,895. NRCan rates the 4Motion at 8.4 L/100 km combined, about 14 per cent thirstier than the 7.4 of the FWD Taos. Volkswagen lists 1,866 L of cargo space (the 4Motion version is smaller). Our experts liked how it drives. It's refined, well-rounded and sporty.

What to Know Before You Start: Subcompact SUV vs Compact SUV
A subcompact SUV is the smallest crossover class, one size under compact crossovers such as the Toyota RAV4, our 2026 AutoTrader Awards Best Compact SUV. You give up some passenger and cargo space for a lower price, easier parking, and usually better fuel economy. NRCan classes all five of our picks as small sport utility vehicles.
All-Wheel Drive or Front-Wheel Drive
Only the Crosstrek makes AWD standard; the other four start with front-wheel drive. AWD costs fuel, too: the AWD Taos uses about 14 per cent more than the FWD version.
Hybrid, Gas or Electric Powertrain
Two picks offer a self-charging hybrid powertrain; the Kona Electric is the only EV. City commuting? Go hybrid. That's where electric assist does most of its work.
Step-by-Step Process for Choosing the Best Subcompact Crossover
Work in this order:
- Budget for delivery fees and taxes, not just the MSRP.
- Decide whether you need AWD, then cross off trims that lack it.
- Compare NRCan combined ratings and pick gas, hybrid or electric.
- Shortlist two or three models and test-drive them the same day.
- Check comparable listings before you negotiate.
Compare Trims and Test Drive
Test-drive the trim you'll buy: a 147-hp Kona feels nothing like the 190-hp N Line. Sit in the back and check rear visibility.

What the Sticker Price Leaves Out
The cheapest Crosstrek costs $3,846 more than the cheapest Kona, about 14 per cent, but it already has AWD; match it with an AWD Kona and the gap shrinks to $1,846. Delivery and fees vary by maker: Subaru's site adds $2,990 in freight and fees, Toyota's $1,930 for delivery plus $999 in dealer fees. Taxes are extra.

Common Mistakes When Buying a Small SUV
Small crossovers are easy to buy badly. Watch for these:
- Assuming every small SUV has AWD. Four of our five picks start with front-wheel drive.
- Comparing US prices. Canadian MSRPs are set separately.
- Ignoring last year's models: see our expert picks for the best affordable subcompact SUVs.
