Historically, a Type R badge signifies the sportiest Hondas. Today, the same naming hierarchy applies to Acura's luxury vehicles with a Type S nameplate. And with exclusive premium features, new technology, and subtle styling tweaks, in the case of the latest and sportiest 2024 Acura Integra Type S, that moniker may as well stand for "sophisticated."
Most Powerful Integra Yet
Borrowing the turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder gas engine from the Honda Civic Type R, the new 2024 Acura Integra Type S bumps the horsepower by five to 320 hp (due to a revamped “high-flow” exhaust system). Torque remains the same as in the Honda hot hatch at 310 lb-ft. The Civic Type R’s critically acclaimed six-speed manual transmission (with a rev-matching function) is the only gearbox available in the Integra Type S. A limited-slip front differential is standard.
We expect the front-wheel-drive Acura to deliver similar elevated handling traits as its Honda sibling. The Integra Type S has the same dual-axis front suspension setup as the Civic Type R, designed to tame front-wheel drive torque steer. Acura says that the Integra Type S gets its own adaptive damper system with "distinct damping characteristics" in comfort, sport, and sport+ driving modes.
If you want to draw less attention while driving your favourite backroads, the Integra Type S’s less aggressive styling and smaller rear lip spoiler are among the first differences you'll notice compared to the wilder-looking Honda. The Type S’s wider front and rear tracks are nestled under broader bodywork than other Integras. They house new lightweight wheels and 265/30 R19 Michelin Pilot Sport 4S high-performance summer tires. Larger diameter two-piece front rotors and larger rear rotors with Brembo four-piston monobloc aluminum callipers all around take care of the stopping process.
A More Luxurious Hot Hatch Cabin
Like all current Integras, the Type S’s interior is heavily based on the current Honda Civic four-door hatchback, which is good news all around. The Honda offers one of the most user-friendly and well-crafted interiors in the mainstream compact class. But being an Acura, the Type S steps up the features and content a notch.
Less aggressive than the racy-looking red versions in the Type R, the Type S’s front seats offer more bolstering than the standard thrones. They are also heated with power adjustments, and are available with your choice of perforated faux-suede in red, black, or white trim.
What Acura claims to be "class-leading standard technology" includes a 10.2-inch driver information interface, a nine-inch colour touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, wireless phone charging, and a Type S-exclusive head-up display. There's also a 16-speaker 530-watt premium audio system when you're not enjoying the high-revving sounds of the Type S's turbo engine.
Remember, the Integra Type S’s rear seat is for two passengers only, unlike the regular Integra’s three-across setup. What does remain is a spacious rear hatch that can hold up to 689 L of cargo space behind its 60/40 split rear seatbacks.
2024 Acura Integra Type S Canadian Availability
The 2024 Acura Integra Type S should arrive at Acura dealers this summer.
We don’t have Canadian pricing yet, but expect the Integra Type S to carry a premium over the Civic Type R, which starts at around $52,000.
