The 2024 Maserati GranTurismo might look like the same car that disappeared back in 2019, but it's not. Under that stylish Italian bodywork is an all-new platform with new engines and one powertrain that's fully electric, the 760-hp Folgore.
Maserati's 2+2 is aimed at long-distance comfort, in keeping with the GranTurismo name, but with the base engine a 490-hp V6, it's still very much a performance car. That engine is Maserati's 3.0L twin-turbo V6, and that lowest-power version comes in a car badged Modena.
A Trofeo version of the GranTurismo will offer the same V6 but with more oomph, 550 hp, to be exact. The Modena model is aimed at drivers who are using their car for "leisure journeys," Maserati says, and includes a cabin environment "inspired by Michelangelo’s Piazza del Campidoglio." The Trofeo model is meant for drivers wanting "adrenaline-fuelled performance," and has carbon fibre in place of wood trim along with a herringbone motif Maserati says gives it a more dynamic look. The exterior will have more carbon fibre, including more aggressive splitters and side skirts. Both versions get all-wheel drive.
As the brand's first ever EV, the all-electric Folgore has our attention. Using a new 800V electrical architecture Maserati calls Atlantis, the Folgore will have a battery with a 92.5-kWh capacity. Three electric motors power the car, one for the front axle and one powering each rear wheel. Together, the motors are capable of producing 1,200 hp. The actual maximum power output to the wheels, though, will be closer to 760 because of electrical system limitations. Motors that can handle more than the system's max allows Maserati to send all 760 hp to just the rear wheels, for example, or to send 400 hp to one single rear tire if that's what the computer needs.
It comes with a tech-loaded cabin with a 12.3-inch centre screen and 8.8-inch display for the climate control, while the digital dash measures 12.2 inches. It will have a multi-design digital clock, digital rear-view mirror, and Maserati will offer over-the-air software updates. Maserati hasn't revealed the inside just yet, so we'll have to use our imaginations a little.
The new platform uses more aluminum and magnesium as well as high-strength steel. The GranTurismo's suspension will use air springs and the car has electronically controlled dampers to help keep it comfortable and planted.
Expect the 2024 Maserati GranTurismo to go on sale sometime in the middle of next year with pricing sometime earlier in the year, during the lead-up to launch.
