New John Cooper Works Minis Coming with 300+ hp

Mini has just announced a pair of new John Cooper Works models. And this time, these Minis are maxed. With more than 300 hp. And yes, that's each.

The latest JCWs are the 2020 Clubman and Countryman, both models are all-wheel drive. They use a new Twin Power four-cylinder engine that manages to put out a whopping 301 hp and 331 lb-ft of torque, up 73 hp over the outgoing JCW models.

How did Mini get all that extra power from the redesigned 2.0 L four? A new crankshaft, stronger main bearings, new pistons and rods. Oh, and a bigger turbo. The compression ratio was dropped to 9.2:1, allowing Mini to pack more boost and make more power. A new cooling system that has a pair of radiators and a higher-capacity fan keeps things from getting too toasty.

With all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic, the Countryman can hit 100 km/h from a stop in 5.1 seconds with the Clubman managing it in 4.9. That's about a second and a half quicker than last year's model.

The all-wheel drive system has been reworked for the JCW models, with reinforced gears and larger couplings and drive shafts to handle the extra power. The gearbox is fitted with a mechanical differential lock to make sure the power gets to the wheels with grip.

Slowing down all those extra ponies are a new sport braking system with four-pot fixed callipers front and rear, along with cooling ducts to make sure that the stopping power doesn't fade. The chassis is lowered by 10 mm and available with adaptive electronic dampers. 18-inch alloy wheels come standard.

Letting you know you're looking at a JCW Clubman or Countryman are large bumper air inlets, new side skirts and rear apron, a roof spoiler, and new mirror caps. Contrast red roof and mirrors are optional, but they all get the John Cooper Works logo. Inside are special sports seats, a sport steering wheel, a special gear lever and an anthracite black headliner.

Both versions will arrive in Canada the third quarter of this year, with pricing to follow.
