When Tesla CEO Elon Musk unveiled the Model 3 in March last year, the concept car interior drew attention. It was minimal and clean, but it didn't look like it could see production. But based on photos caught earlier this week by an attentive fan, that dash is heading to production.
The photos, snapped of a test car completing development work in California, shows a dash that looks just like the concept. Instead of a conventional dash with an instrument cluster, center stack, and vents, there is just a wide strip of what looks like wood trim, a steering wheel, and what looks to be a 15.0-inch screen.
Musk had previously said that the Model 3 would only get a single screen in place of a conventional dashboard and center stack. He tweeted earlier this year that "the more autonomous a car is, the less dash info you need." These photos confirm the tweets and show us what it looks like. Don't worry about the missing vents, the climate control system uses that thin strip above the wood trim as an extra-long vent.
It's far from conventional, but it certainly looks clean. And Tesla's certainly not the first to try center-mounted gauges. Toyota and Mini have been doing that for years.
The Model 3 is expected to go on sale later this year, with the company still stating plans to build 500,000 cars next year.
