Fiat Chrysler Automobiles will have 1,400 horsepower on display at this year's New York auto show when it parks the Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk next to the Dodge Challenger SRT Demon already confirmed for its Big Apple debut.
Road & Track cites a source who told the publication the Hellcat-powered Trackhawk SUV will be unveiled in New York, following confirmation at the 2016 Detroit auto show that FCA would cram its 6.2L supercharged Hemi under the Grand Cherokee's hood.
The question is whether the Trackhawk will make the full 707 horsepower its Challenger and Charger Hellcat cousins get; while Grand Cherokee's all-wheel drive layout in theory means more efficient power delivery, we wonder what kind of driveline upgrades would be necessary to keep differentials and driveshafts borrowed from the SRT model from destroying themselves in a full-throttle launch. We would expect some chassis upgrades -- bigger tires and brakes, and a tweaked suspension -- to rein in that extra juice; the SRT is already a formidable track weapon, but an extra 225 hp is no small beans.
If Jeep does stick with the 707-hp specification, Trackhawk would be the most powerful production SUV on the planet -- ahead of the 600-hp Bentley Bentayga -- when it goes on sale, which will happen this summer.
