Mazda has just taken the curtain off the all-new 2017 CX-5 crossover at the Canadian International Auto Show. The new CX-5 starts from $24,900 and will see a diesel engine introduced before the end of the year.
The styling changes aren't huge compared with last year's model, but they definitely give the small SUV a more attractive appearance. The grille is tilted forward like the CX-9, the door stampings are slightly more subtle, and the head and tail lights are more pointed. Those headlights are now LED lamps as standard. Inside there are big changes. The new CX-5 looks much more upscale than the old one, again taking a page from the design of the CX-9.
Standard equipment on the new crossover includes Mazda's G-Vectoring control which adjusts power delivery to improve turn in and stability. It will have 17-inch alloys, a rearview camera, and a 7.0-inch touchscreen with Mazda's HMI commander dial. The base engine will be a 2.0L Skyactiv four-cylinder that produces 155 hp and 150 lb-ft. That engine will come with a six-speed manual transmission. If you want an automatic, that will be a six-speed that comes with the 2.5L Skyactiv-G four-cylinder that produces 187 hp and 185 lb-ft. Later in the year, a 2.2L Skyactiv-D turbo-diesel will be available to add torque and fuel efficiency.
The mid-level CX-5 GS trim starts at $29,100, which is a slight drop from 2016. That model will get a power liftgate, front wiper de-icer, and a heated steering wheel. Top-trim GT adds LED fog lights, heated rear seats, and more, for $34,700. That is a slight drop from last year as well.
The 2017 CX-5 should arrive in dealers this March, with the diesel options arriving later this year.
