General Motors has announced that they will recall approximately 362,000 vehicles in Canada to fix an airbag sensor module. The module contains a defect that can prevent the deployment of the front airbags and pretensioners in certain circumstances.
The module is used for sensing and diagnostics for the airbags and seat-belt pretensioners. It has software that can cause the module to run a diagnostic test under certain specific driving conditions. That will cause the airbags and pretensioners to be de-activated temporarily. If a crash occurred during that time, the safety systems may not activate.
The vehicles affected by the recall include 2014-2016 Buick LaCrosse and Chevrolet Spark EV, 2014-2017 Chevrolet Corvette, Trax, Silverado 1500, Buick Encore and GMC Sierra 1500, and 2015-2017 model year Chevy Tahoe, Suburban, and Silverado HD, GMC Yukon, Yukon XL, Sierra HD, and Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV.
GM will notify customers of the affected vehicles, and the fix is a free software update at the dealer. Customers of those models can look up their vehicle at recalls.gm.ca to see if they are part of the recall.
