2007 Mazda RX-8

by Ian_Mac on 10-15-2012
Mechanic's Car
A lovely looking car which can be picked up cheap these days. However beware, the nature of RX8s mean they do require frequent tinkering, more often than usual oil changes and so on. Most of this stems from the fact it has a rotary engine I believe.

The fact it is discontinued could make getting parts an issue, I'm not sure.

The RX8 was actually withdrawn form the european market because it couldn't meet emissions standards.

For these reasons it is regarded as a mechanic's car - you really need to know what you're doing to keep the bills down if you want to drive one of these.

2004 BMW Z3

by Ian_Mac on 10-15-2012
A nice looking car for those on a budget
The Z3 is just about holding onto it's style, although so many improvements were made in the development of the Z4, it's well worth trying to find the budget to make the jump to the 4, a much more stylish body and comfortable interior with improved handling...but for those whose budgets won't stretch, the Z3 is still a great entry point to sports roadster motoring and if you find one which was cared for, is still very enjoyable to drive.

2006 Toyota Yaris

Nice little car
I believe the Yaris has won several awards in it's day for performance and styling and it's no wonder. A small and efficient machine, it's a great town car and super easy to park given it's small size and excellent visibility thanks to generous design at the rear of the car.

2009 Honda Accord

by Ian_Mac on 10-12-2012
Solid everyday car
Drove one of these for a few months and I have to say, it's a decent car that drives well and is nicely designed, both inside and out. There is no wow factor but that's expected for a car in it's class. The fact that a lot of rental firms provide accords points to it's build quality and reliability.

2013 Ford Mustang

Trim: Boss 302
by Ian_Mac on 10-11-2012
Just a fantastically fun car
Mustangs have a special kind of reputation, some of it fair some of it not. As ever the interior just doesn't seem to match up with what is honestly a beautiful looking exterior, but this is made up for by the incredibly comfortable seats and steering wheel material.

The throb of the 5L engine is a genuine thrill even for a non-car fanatic, and it has some serious pep when you want to accelerate into space on the highway. This is all fantastic fun, and of course the Boss 302 is something special so does turn heads (and ears) wherever it goes.

2010 Hyundai Elantra

by Ian_Mac on 10-11-2012
A really nice surprise
Drove this car for a few months as a long term rental. I was really pleasantly surprised - the dashboard and controls are logically and tastefully laid out. It's a really comfortable drive too, even over long distances. The performance was good and the exterior styling was obviously a little generic but not bad.

All in all for the budget range it's a great option, I would recommend it.

2000 Nissan Micra

by Ian_Mac on 10-11-2012
Funny little car - but has its charms
Drove one of these when I first passed my driving test. It's a great starter car, easy to handle and on the manual version the clutch feels like a go kart.

It looks pretty odd but has a quirky charm I suppose. It's not really a pleasure to drive, the interior is far from luxurious but it comes with the territory.

The main benefit has got to be the fuel efficiency. I can't remember the exact MPG but I remember a tank of gas kept me going for weeks! Plus they are build well, no issues ever came up in 4 years. I can't overstate what a good little runner this car is.

2006 BMW Z4

by Ian_Mac on 10-11-2012
Great fun to drive
Drove a BMW Z4 for four years and loved every minute of it. This car turns heads and really looks a million bucks when washed up on a sunny day with the top down.

Being a BMW, the build quality is obvious and you'll rarely have an issue. Some of the second generation Z4s have an issue with mist inside the headlights but it's not a big deal.

The downsides? Well on long journeys the car is pretty uncomfortable, it is tight inside and I'm only 5'10". It is not the most fuel efficient car either.

But none of that really matters when you're driving one such a beautiful machine does it!

2006 Mazda Mazda3

Trim: MAZDA3 SPORT GT
by Ian_Mac on 10-11-2012
Reliable yet unremarkable
Bought this car because I was new to Canada (from the UK) and needed something reliable and economic yet had some style about it.

Well, the car is certainly reliable, no problems so far despite having over 150K on the clock, and when I serviced it the garage said it was in good shape, so Mazda seem to have built this car to last.

The style of the GT is quite nice with a spoiler and different rims to the regular Mazda3, but all in all it's a little unremarkable but a good decent car that won't let you down and achieves good MPG.
