2012 Honda CR-V

Trim: EX-L
by EVC95 on 11-28-2013
The Best Car I've Owned!
I've now been driving my 2012 black CRV EXL for
6 months/10,000km. Purchased used with only 20,000km. I shopped around a LOT, and the CRV checked all of the boxes on my list - good fuel economy, lots of space inside, sunroof, satellite radio, USB, compact size, rear wiper, heated leather seats...the list goes on. It's lots of fun to drive. I've never wished for more engine power. I average 26mpg mixed city/highway and over 33 on the freeway, which is fantastic for an SUV with all wheel drive. It's much quieter on the highway than previous generation CRV's, and it still handles well at speeds in excess of 130 km/h. The interior is virtually perfect from an ergonomic standpoint. All the materials are very high quality and well assembled. I'm a big fan of the leather that Honda uses. The rear folding seat mechanism is very convenient.

Gripes (FYI, they're minor and hard to find!):

~ I wish there were grab handles on BOTH ends of the tailgate to close it.

~ There really should have been lights in the glovebox and massive centre console.

~ There isn't a way to customize the info screens to display a mixture of metric and imperial units, it's either one or the other (I read distance in km, but temperature in F).

I could go on and on all day about how much I love this car!

Over the years I've owned various German/Scandinavian cars, as well as American. This is my first Japanese car, but so far it's the best one I've owned! It's caused me absolutely no trouble, which all of my previous cars did in the first few months of ownership. The quality and reliability of my CRV makes me want to buy it all over again!

1990 Chevrolet Caprice

Trim: LS Brougham
by EVC95 on 04-04-2013
A Classic Chevrolet
My Grandpa has owned his Caprice since he bought it new in 1990. It's been incredibly reliable! He LOVES to drive, and has put 345,000 kilometers on it in the last 23 years. Even with all that milage, it literally looks BRAND NEW! I'm not kidding. There is one rust spot the size of a penny behind the rear wheel, and the cloth on the edge of the drivers seat is looking quite worn and scuffed as he rubs it every time he gets in/out. That's literally it. Much of its condition has to do with how he keeps it: washes it once a week, garage kept, always spotlessly clean. He babies it. The reliability of these older Chevy's is fantastic. He's only done regular upkeep like tires, wipers, bearings, transmission, etc. The transmissions in these last about 175,000km. Fuel economy is pretty bad (15/23 ish), but it's a huge V8, what do you expect. My '03 Malibu isn't far behind it at 16/26, so it's not too bad in comparison. Handling is very sloppy, but it's a huge boat of a car. Comfort is amazing, especially in the highway. Like sitting on a sofa, so comfy!

His plan was to keep this car from 1990 - 2005, then buy a new one (probably Malibu or something), but he loves it so much, he has said many times that he never wants to sell it. It's a great, reliable classic, and they sure don't make 'em like this anymore. I highly recommend a Caprice of this era if you're looking for comfort, reliability, and classic styling, and don't really care about handling or gas milage.

1995 Volkswagen Eurovan

Trim: Camper
by EVC95 on 03-01-2013
I Love My EuroVan!
I purchased a 1995 VW EuroVan Camper exactly one year ago, and still love it to this day! It's been great to me. It's a second vehicle to me, so at times I don't drive it (or even start it) for three months at a time. Always starts on the first time, even after sitting for three months in the middle of winter. The camper conversion it great. I chose the EuroVan Camper over a traditional Westfalia because of its superior performance compared to a Vanagon. I have no trouble doing 110 - 115 kph on the highway. I have the 5-speed manual, and it's a great transmission. My gas consumption is in the low to mid 20's on the highway (mpg), not bad for a heavy van! Pack it full of people or stuff, though, and those numbers go down.

Great cab area with overly-easy controls and solid German construction. The seating position is really high, and the visibility is the best I've ever experienced! The best climate system I'v experienced, as well. Icy, icy cold in the summer, and toasty in the winter.

It's a VW, so the parts and repairs are expensive, but if you keep up with the (semi-frequent) repairs, it'll last forever! Mine has 235,000km and still has lots left in it! Awesomely reliability, my van has never let me down! It's one of my favourite vehicles to date!
