1999 BMW Z3

Trim: Coupe 2.8
by ChuckC on 11-13-2012
You might love it more than your spouse
The Z3 Coupe was only made from 99 to 03. BMW told me that about 5000 were made in total. No base coupes were sold in Canada - only M Coupes. If it's possible to love a car, and you love to drive, you will love this car. Seek one out in the US and bring it home. Beware the risk though - your spouse might end up jealous of the amount of attention and devotion the Coupe will bring out in you. It's hand-in-glove handling, instant get-up-and-go and stealthy size will have you in license-risking territory faster than that other person in your life can say "Divorce! NOW!!"

2005 BMW 3 Series

Trim: 325CI Premium
by ChuckC on 11-13-2012
Finally, a reliable BMW
I had two 99s, a 318ti and a Z3 Coupe. Each was towed at least once. Both were great fun, but only when they worked. The 2005 325Ci Coupe looked like it was moving standing still, and it actually worked right most of the time. The only major wonky part was the water pump, which failed on the 91-99 E36s too, so if you knew about it, you could change it ahead of time. Mine got great mileage around town and was a solid driver for the almost 3 years I owned it. But, for some reason, it would not sell. Low miles, rust free, and with 8 tires and wheels, safetied and e-tested, and in a popular color and fully loaded, it took 8 months and a 7k price drop to sell it. So be warned if you think you want one and won't keep it long-term: you could end up with something on your hands that nobody wants.

2002 Audi TT

Trim: Quattro coupe
by ChuckC on 11-13-2012
Sporty but not a sports car
The TT is more comfortable than it looks, and it looks pretty darn good. It is very smooth and capable on the highway, though it's short wheelbase means it's a bumpy ride around town. If you squint, it looks like a squished New Beetle, and it kind of is, under the skin. But it's wrapped and curved sheet metal means it's more of a chick magnet than a chick car. Reliability is not the long suit of any Audi, and the Hungary-made TT MK1s are no exception. Quick Google searches bring up a myriad of problems with everything from window regulators to wishy-washy hatch lights to a privacy cover seemingly designed to rattle from the factory. But it's all forgotten once the road turns twisty or snowy. Small, quick, and tractive at all four corners makes the stylish TT a great choice for Canadians. Mine is old and well used but still turns heads and is great fun to drive.
