2009 Pontiac Torrent

Trim: 3.4L V6 AWD
by CanuckCrossbow on 11-06-2017
Decent car, runs well with very few problems
Purchased this car back in 2014 and have not had many issues with it. It does well in the snow and the All Wheel Drive is great for handling slightly rougher terrain. The ground clearance is ideal

There is plenty of space in the cabin to allow movement around without a feeling of being enclosed. It's possible to fit a 10' long piece of lumber in the car with the front passenger seat folded down and the rear seat down.

Fuel economy is average (10.3l/100Km) but then it's an older SUV and so doesn't have the enhancements like newer cars.

If repairs are needed they're fairly straightforward and parts can be sourced readily from scrap yards or dealers. Mine is still going strong and should continue to do so.

Roomy Ride
I have owned this SUV for four years, and it has been a great car. It is roomy and comfortable. Have taken it camping, Northern Ontario. Great on gas, travelled from one side of Ontario Canada to the other side, also travelled to Montreal. Would recommend this SUV to anyone that is looking for a great economical roomy ride.

Great Usage
Have had this car since Jan 2009, have had great usage with this car. Only have had to do minor repairs and still runs wonderfully. I love this car and will be sad in the future when it will be time to be done with it.

Great SUV
Great reliable SUV. This just isn't big enough for my needs.
Great vehicle value for cost of ownership, only complaint is the turning radius being quite large. Nicely equipped and spacious for passengers.

Great SUV that is very versatile and handles every cargo situation with ease.
Strong V6 fun to drive SUV with a great factory - Pioneer sound system with subwoofer. Sounds GREAT! Flexibility of versatile folding seats and massive pass-through. Nice thick "momo" style steering wheel exactly like my Corvette. Sliding rear seat comes in handy for oversized loads. Roof rack can always ensure everything can come home in one trip. AWD, traction control keeps you going on any road conditions. Overall fun to drive solid feeling SUV without high fuel consumption of a full size. Easy to use dial climate controls and steering wheel mounted stereo and cruise control .
Overall great vehicle that really puts the "Sport" and "Utility" in SUV

A little more about the Torrent
This is the 2nd Torrent in our fleet. My daughter enjoyed the higher ride and visibility it allows down the road. Lots of room inside for moving her stuff back and forth to school last year. It handled well on the Northern Ontario roads in all seasons. We trusted the car (and her driving ability) in the winter. New tires were added and the brakes were done when we bought it last year. The previous owner had a garage it was stored in when not on the road. The body is in excellent condition for being 7 years old. If not for my daughter moving overseas she would still be enjoying the car.

Nice SUV
It has style and built strong!! Using a chain not a timing belt... very solid car! I am happy to have bought it and it's no wonder both the Equinox and Torrent were bigger sellers..

This one is calling your name!
This vehicle looks impressive in shape and style, drives exceptionally well and is very safe. I change vehicles every 5 years and have no concern whatsoever about its future performance! I Just returned from a trip up and down through the mountains, loaded up with 5 passengers and their luggage and yet it was a breeze. This Car/SUV was designed for the Olympics 2008 in Vancouver to transfer VIP's in comfort and with piles of luggage from the Airport to their various destinations. Should you be tempted, the 3.4 l motor would pull whatever you have (trailer/camper) without killing the fairly good gasoline economy.

Good ride but could have been better
I loved the exterior of my 2007 Torrent AWD and was excited about the interior but after driving it for a while I noticed that the good and the bad:

THE BAD
The outlet is inconveniently located (too low to plug a Bluetooth device and talk), the front seats have no arm rests, the fuel economy is not what they say it is...it takes a full tank for 500 km driving little city and mostly hwy no more than 100-110 km/h. I used to have a '98 FWD Pontiac Trans Sport, amazing minivan, in short...a SPRING CHICKEN...on the same size fuel tank I was driving 600 km...maybe AWD takes up more fuel
Well, the Torrent is more like a Grandma who's really trying....

The GOOD
Plenty of leg room both at the front and back, the back seat is adjustable, which is great, the cargo area is fairly large. It drives nicely but I find it kind of lazy when accelerating, especially up hill. Overall it seems pretty "healthy" for a 5 yr old car

All in all, I think there are better choices for the $$, but if you really want a Torrent, is not bad but you have to put up with these things

Very good SUV for families and young adults
After leasing a 2006 Torrent and loving it, I purchased a 2009 Pontiac Torrent AWD and am very pleased with it. The base model may lack some comfort and convenience features (so consider the non-base model) but it is a great all-around family and stuff hauler. Lots of leg and cargo room for this segment. That said, even the base comes with a tire pressure monitoring system, XM capability, and vehicle diagnostics display, Perhaps the best is the mix of utility, style, and FANTASTIC all weather driving. If you need a car that can plow through any winter storm sure-footed, this is your car. If you experience any repair needs, they are inexpensive and minor. I've had nothing but good experiences with my Pontiacs dating back to my 2001 Montana EXT.
If you are considering this car, another good look should be given to the last generation Chevrolet Equinox AWD (LT or LTZ).

2008 Torrent
Love being able to move the backseat fowards and back. Allows me to increase the space in the cargo area or move the kids back far enough that they can't kick my seat. The Firestone tires we terrible, absolutely no traction in snow and hydroplanning in the rain. Best thing I ever did was to buy snow tires. Better mileage in my mini van and the seats are more comfortable in the van. Should have saved a few bucks and bought a better model of the Equinox.

So Far, So Good
Have only had this vehicle for a couple of months now and am overall quite happy with it. We chose the Torrent because it offered the best comfort, fuel economy and AWD in our budget. I have been very happy with how it handles in the snow. The three shoulder belts in the back are comfortable for the kids and everything on the dash is easy to understand and doesn't make me feel like I'm flying a plane. If I have complaints they relate to the surprisingly small cargo area with the awkward picnic table in the back and the relatively loud engine.
