Ford Escort
All around cheap vehicle, I had one for two years and never really had a problem with it, I would say it's a good beginner vehicle.

This car has lasted a long time
No rust... Great a/c, this car was a granny car and you can tell - it's as scared of going on the highways as I am.

Love this car
I've owned two escorts over the years and the reliability of them is outstanding. It was a sad day when Ford took them out of production.

Great little city car
We really like our escort. It get's great mileage in the city and make a very good errand vehicle. It rides well and we have even managed on some days in turning it into a "truck" with the fold down seats.

Reliable and efficient
I commute several hours a day and find the ford escort to be comfortable and reliable. It is not expensive to fill up and the gas tank lasts for several trips.

This ford has many great features. I especially like the key-less entry, it is much better then having to put the key in the lock, especially in the winter.

The cars maintenance has been minimal, consisting mostly of routine care. If parts do need replacing they tend to be low in cost and easily accessible.

Overall owing this car has been a great experience. It can go into the city or out into the country making it a very diverse vehicle.

Good ride and lots of storage with seats up or down.
Have had the car for 10 years, though low mileage, it is a comfortable ride. We can store a lot when shopping. Would not pick a black color as a person sees all the dust on it. It has a running board so easy to get in and out of. Leather seats which have held up great. Will continue to keep it.

So reliable after all these years
My old Ford Escort was originally purchased new in 1997 by my parents, and I bought it off them in 2001. I still own it and it has generally been so incredibly reliable over the years.

Aside from a few minor things, the only real issue with this car that keeps cropping up is that the brake rotors seem to get warped easily. I am not hard on my cars and others cars I've owned are fine in this regard. The rotors don't get so bad that you need to replace them immediately, but you will get a bit of shaking at really high speeds if you don't rotate or replace them.

The car drives nice enough. It's a bit underpowered for me but gets me around. I've certainly driven worse handling vehicles. There's no electric assist on the steering so the steering feels pretty good with nice resistance.

I have no rust on it, unlike many others I've seen. People must really not take care of their vehicles. I went from the south coast of BC to northern BC in 2002 and there's no rusting.

I'd say this vehicle could still be sold to a student in 2012 and they could use it get to school or work for years to come with a little TLC (but not even that much!). I just get my regular oil and filter changes and other than that don't put much money into at all, and it's late 2012 now! Overall, good value. I plan on replacing it soon, though, and will likely go back to Ford to get a Focus or Fusion or something like that.

Sporty peppy car
Bought new in 1998 and with good upkeep it's still kicking. It's sporty and peppy and rides smooth. Comfortable, good trunk space and great on gas. Factory stereo sounds great. Have just had to do regular maintenance on the vehicle had no major problems and since it's been mostly in Florida since new it has no rust etc on body.

good small car
The engine has been really reliable. The interior space especially shoulder room is a bit cramped. Arm rests would have been a great help. I also find it low to the ground and difficult to get in and out of. The gas mileage has been really good and it has enough power to easily pass on the hills.

Long lasting economy vehicle
Bought this in 2009 from a guy who hadn't taken very good car of it. It still ran, but barely. Plugs, wires, filters, oil and a new catalytic converter and it ran great. It starts at -40F and the heater keeps the windows clear, the A/C keeps it comfortable in weather up to 95F (the warmest I've driven it in). The engine is big enough for the vehicle, but I doubt it would do well with a trailer, you can feel the engine working harder with four adults in it. I really like the size of the cabin, fold down the seats and you've got room for 8' boards. With seats up and two carseats in the back you still have room for a double stroller and groceries.
There are some down sides. I'm impressed with the continued gas milage near 30mpg in the summer (I don't check in the winter because I let it warm up for 10-15 min every time I drive it.) Note: The odometer is both a. beyond it mechanical limit and b. not accurate, so I have no milage comparisons. The 1.9L engine is pretty underpowered for anything heavy, that being said, this vehicle isn't made for heavy stuff. The seat belts in the back have stopped locking in place and you can't buy new ones anymore, now we can't use it for the kids because it just isn't safe. The rear defrost only works on the top half and the rear wiper, while moves, has a blown spring and won't make contact with the glass. I've replaced the following: Half axles, Oil pan, Front shocks, Catalytic converter, TPS, O2 sensor, radio, Computer (I don't know if it needed it, but I got a hold of a new one so I put it in), Rear hatch struts, Rims, sun visors. It needs a new sub woofer, but that isn't a priority for me.
Currently 1st gear is going in the automatic transmission, so I'm in the market. I wish it was worth it to fix this vehicle because I love the setup, but we need something safe for the kids.

Most reliable, inexpensive vehicle I could possibly own
I've owned this car for 5 years. Bought it with 134,000kms and now have 228,000kms. It has needed minor repairs, but overall this has certainly been the best car I could have imagined buying. None of the repairs have been major, and for a car that was 10 years old when I bought it (now it's 15 years old) minor repairs are expected. The motor runs just like it did the day I bought it. It's never left me stranded. It's driven nearly every single day in the city, and for two years now, once a month or so, I make the trip from Sarnia to Oshawa and back again the next day, a 700km round trip. Excellent highway mileage, between 6L and 6.5L/100kms. Performance is fine. Remember, this is an economy car, so understanding that, I have no complaints about the performance at all. Perfect automobile for students (like myself.) Not too difficult to work on, I've done almost everything myself so far.

I would recommend the 5 speed standard, as it improves performance and makes this car much more fun and actually quite enjoyable to drive still. Also recommend snow tires. The first winter I had this car, it wasn't good in the snow. Ofcourse snow tires are much better no matter what you drive, but without them, I found this car had a harder time with the snow compared to my first car. Now I own snow tires, so it rocks in the snow now!

Cheap parts
This was the family station wagon for years, and i must admit the only Ford I ever drove that didn't brake down within it's first year of ownership.

This spacious wagon model was certainly built for practical purposes and not to show off for it's looks...

It drove well, and wasn't too had on the gas either even though it did seem sluggish at times to drive.

Not recommended
There is one thing which was predictable: add 8-10 years to the make of the vehicle. That will be the final year of its life. There is a reason why you don't see any of these on the streets anymore, and haven't seen them for a good few years. The only positive: it had a bit of a "nimble" feeling while driving. In our case, the engine went. While I admit there could have been some additional preventative maintenance, the outcome would have been the same. Considering the top dollar we paid for it, this was by far the worst car investment we've made to date.

Only if you have to buy one
Owned this car for 2 years. At about the 80k km mark, the fun started. Transmission problems. replacement of major parts, weird and unidentifiable noises from the engine but only at specific speeds. This was the car that broke the back of my every buying a Ford again. I realize Ford have made massive strides in recent years but steer clear of this era completley.
