History/Overview

After introducing its mid-size Atlas SUV to the North American public for the 2018 model year, Volkswagen came back two years ago with a "coupe" version of the latter. In fact, we're talking about a vehicle with a rear section featuring a sloping roof, as well as a sportier style. The model has enjoyed strong popularity, at the expense of Atlas sales, however. It has nonetheless allowed the brand to progress, which is often the case when you offer consumers options.

Changes for 2022

The Atlas Cross Sport returns in the same form for 2022. Note that the Atlas has its own file in this guide.

Available Versions

There are four trim levels with the Atlas Cross Sport: Trendline, Comfortline, Highline, and Execline. Each is equipped with the 2-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, the eight-speed automatic transmission, as well as 4Motion all-wheel drive. Power is rated at 235 horsepower, torque at 258 lb-ft.

Standard Equipment

Right off the bat, the Trendline model offers us heated front seats, 18-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights and daytime running lights, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto app integration, as well as safety features like automatic emergency braking and alerts for blind spots and rear cross traffic.

Moving up to the Comfortline model gives us keyless access, remote start, a power liftgate, wireless charging for cell phones, a dual-zone automatic climate control system, leatherette seats, a heated steering wheel in eco-leather, navigation, adaptive cruise control at all speeds, as well as parking distance control.

With the Highline variant, we get more with hands-free liftgate opening, adaptive LED headlights, 20-inch alloy wheels, a power panoramic sunroof, ventilated front seats, heated mirrors, heated front and rear seats, ambient interior lighting, as well as perforated leather for the seats.

Then with the Execline trim, you get the Travel Assist system which includes adaptive cruise control, lane keeping and emergency assist, a Fender audio system with 12 speakers and subwoofer, sensors for the parking assist system, a camera offering a 360-degree view, traffic sign recognition, as well as automatic low beams.

Important Options

With each version, you have choices regarding the type of seat surface. We're talking about cloth as standard, leatherette thereafter, then more sophisticated leathers with the top-of-the-line model. An engine block heater is offered with the Highline version and the Execline model can receive the R-Line package which includes low rolling resistance all-season tires, a stainless steel pedal set with aluminum-look finish, R-Line exterior accents, an R-Line multifunction sport steering wheel (leather-wrapped), as well as dark carbon fibre trim inside.

Fuel Consumption

Fuel consumption with the Atlas Cross Sport is 11.7 litres per 100 kilometres in the city, 10.0 litres on the highway.

Competition

In the segment, not all mid-size SUVs are offered in "coupe" version. However, there are a few players that play the same card like the Chevrolet Blazer and the Ford Edge which is in its final miles. In fact, this practice is more common in the luxury SUV segment, notably with approaches like the Mercedes-Benz GLE coupe or the X6 compared to the BMW X5. The prices aren't the same, however.
