The hatchback version of the 12th-generation Toyota Corolla debuted in 2019 to replace the Corolla iM, a car that started life as part of the now-defunct Scion brand.
What’s New/Key Changes From Last Year
The 2022 Toyota Corolla hatchback’s sole change is taillights that come on automatically when the car is in gear, to conform with a Transport Canada mandate that came into effect in September 2021.
When shopping for a Corolla hatchback, your first choice is whether to match the car’s 2.0L four-cylinder engine with a six-speed manual or continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). From there, you can choose base, SE, SE Upgrade and XSE trims to go with either transmission, or a Nightshade Edition package exclusive to CVT-equipped models.
The Corolla hatchback’s standard features include passive keyless entry, push-button engine start, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, an 8.0-inch touchscreen, six-speaker audio, electric parking brake, power windows, a windshield de-icer, automatic A/C, LED headlights/taillights, heated/power-adjustable side mirrors, and 15-inch steel wheels with covers.
Also included is the Toyota Safety Sense driver assist suite. In 6MT cars, it comprises lane departure alert/prevention, automatic high beams, and highway-speed radar cruise control. CVT cars get lane-tracing assist, and full-speed radar cruise.
The SE trim package adds leather-trimmed steering wheel/shifter, 16-inch alloy wheels, heated front seats, blind spot monitor, and rear cross-traffic alert. SE Upgrade trim brings 18-inch wheels, a heated steering wheel, and wireless smartphone charging. With the CVT, SE and SE Upgrade also get remote engine start.
The Nightshade Edition is a cosmetic package that builds on SE Upgrade with black wheels; black side rocker panels; and black door handles, spoiler, grille surround, mirrors, and badges.
XSE trim gains a digital gauge display, a power driver’s seat with lumbar, dual-zone A/C, cloth/SoftTex upholstery, an eight-speaker stereo, and fog lights. XSE models with the automatic transmission add navigation.
Toyota’s fuel consumption estimates for the Corolla hatchback are 8.4/6.7 L/100 km (city/highway) with the manual transmission, and 7.5/5.8 with the CVT.
