History/Overview

The Toyota Prius is a rolling advertisement for the company’s gas-electric hybrid powertrain technology. In more than two decades on the market, it has also spawned a wide range of hybrids based on other existing Toyota models.

What’s New/Key Changes From Last Year

For 2022, Prius e-AWD models with the Tech and Tech Advanced packages can be done up in a new two-tone paint job that pairs a white body with a black roof.

Meanwhile, Prius Technology models add standard fog lights.

Available Trims

Toyota offers the Prius in base and Technology trim levels. Both can be optioned with an e-AWD system that uses a rear-mounted electric motor to provide four-wheel traction. Up front, a 1.8L gas engine works with a primary motor and a continuously variable transmission as the car’s main source of propulsion.

Standard Features

The base Prius comes with passive keyless entry, smartphone integration, a six-speaker stereo, 7.0-inch infotainment touchscreen, heated front seats, automatic climate control, 15-inch alloy wheels, all-LED exterior lighting, and power-adjustable/heated side mirrors.

Driver safety aids include lane tracing assist, forward collision detection with automatic braking, automatic high beams, lane departure alert with steering assist, and radar cruise control.

E-AWD models gain fog lights, and e-AWD Technology trim adds wireless smartphone charging, a heated/leather-trimmed steering wheel, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, rain-sensing wipers, Softex seat upholstery, and blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert.

Front-wheel drive Technology models also get a sunroof, and a power driver’s seat with lumbar.

Key Options

The Prius e-AWD Tech package can be optioned with an Advanced option that brings an integrated garage door remote, adaptive/auto-leveling headlights, satellite radio, a head-up display, navigation, an 11.6-inch touchscreen, and front parking sensors with park assist.

Fuel Economy

Toyota’s fuel consumption estimates for the Prius are 4.4/4.7 L/100 km (city/highway) for front-drive models, and 4.6/5.0 for the e-AWD powertrain.

Competition

Your other compact gas-electric hybrid options include the Hyundai Ioniq, the Kia Niro, and the Honda Insight. If you want a hybrid wearing a better-known nameplate, Toyota makes a gas-electric version of the Corolla sedan.
