Overall Score
The Impreza is a cheap, reliable, AWD vehicle that puts big SUVs to shame. I barely have to spend money fixing the vehicle because there were none. Only thing that did came up with often was the amount of times i have to do vehicle alignment. Performance is very adequate, acceleration at slow speed is smooth and steady. I wish this vehicle has more power and less body roll with better city fuel economy, and more tech features. Most of those complaints were addressed in the 2017 re-design.

Issue: On certain vehicles, the front axle shafts may not have been manufactured properly. As a result, the axle shaft(s) could break and cause a loss of power to the wheels. Additionally, if the vehicle is parked and the parking brake isn't applied, the vehicle could roll away. Safety Risk: A loss of power to the wheels could increase the risk of a crash. A parked vehicle that rolls away could also create the risk of an injury or a crash. Corrective Actions: Subaru will notify owners by mail and advise you to take your vehicle to a dealership to inspect the front axle shafts and, if necessary, replace them.

Issue: On certain vehicles, the brake lamp switch may not have been adjusted correctly. As a result, the brake lamps could turn on without applying the brake pedal. It may also be possible to start the vehicle and shift the transmission out of the Park position (P) without pressing the brake pedal. If this happens, the vehicle could move unexpectedly. Safety Risk: Brake lamps that stay on when the vehicle isn't braking could confuse other drivers and increase the risk of a crash. A vehicle that moves suddenly could increase the risk of a crash. Issue: On certain vehicles, the side reflex reflectors in the headlamp assemblies may not reflect enough light at some viewing angles. Additionally, the low beam reflector in the left headlamp may not reflect light correctly. As a result, the reflectors may not meet the requirements of Canadian regulations. Note: This recall only affects vehicles equipped with halogen headlamps. Safety Risk: Reflex reflectors that do not reflect enough light may make the vehicle less visible to other road users. A low beam that is not reflected correctly could cause glare for oncoming drivers. Both issues could increase the risk of a crash. Corrective Actions: Subaru will notify owners by mail. The corrective actions for this recall are under development.

Issue: On certain vehicles, the engine control module (ECM) may have been programmed incorrectly. As a result, the internal temperature of the ignition coils may increase. This could cause a short circuit and a blown fuse. This may result in a sudden loss of engine power with an inability to immediately restart. Note: This recall replaces WUQ-02 (Transport Canada recall 2019-526). Vehicles that were repaired under that recall also require this repair. Safety Risk: A sudden loss of engine power could increase the risk of a crash. Issue: This recall is for certain vehicles that had an airbag inflator replaced as a part of an earlier recall campaign. This recall provides a final repair. Long-term exposure to high absolute humidity and temperature, combined with high temperature cycling, may eventually degrade the propellant contained in the passenger-front airbag. This could cause the airbag to deploy with more force than normal. If the airbag inflator ruptures, fragments could be propelled toward vehicle occupants or cause damage to the airbag assembly, preventing its proper function. Safety Risk: If the vehicle is involved in a crash requiring an airbag deployment, the airbag inflator could rupture and create a risk of injury. Corrective Actions: Owners will be notified by mail and instructed to take their vehicle to a dealer to inspect the passenger-front airbag inflator. The passenger-front airbag module or inflator will be replaced as necessary. Note: The Canadian climate results in the propellant degrading slowly. This recall is being conducted as a precaution to address future risk. It is expected that all airbag inflators will be replaced before their function would be affected.

On certain vehicles, due to software programming within the engine control unit, the operating threshold of the radiator fan used to cool the fuel temperature is not set low enough for the fan to operate at an appropriate temperature when using winter blend fuels. This could result in the fuel vaporizing prematurely under certain outside temperatures and driving conditions, which could cause a decrease in fuel pressure. If this occurs, the engine may stall in certain circumstances while the vehicle is in motion, including low speed, stop-and-go traffic, or at a stop and may not be able to be restarted immediately, which could increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or property damage. On certain vehicles, the Occupant Control Unit (OCU) of the ODS (Occupant Detection System) may incorrectly identify a front passenger occupant when seated in the front passenger seat if the passenger touches a metal part of the vehicle that is electrically grounded (i.e. forward/reward seat adjustment lever) while using an IPod or cell phone plugged into the accessory power outlet. This may result in the deactivation of the ODS, and cause the Air Bag Warning Light to illuminate and the Passenger Air Bag Indicator would illuminate “OFF”, providing a visual warning that the air bag system is not operating properly. On certain vehicles equipped with a dealer-installed accessory remote engine starter, if the fob is dropped, movement of the internal battery retaining clip may occur and cause damage to a component on the printed circuit board. Under this condition, the fob may transmit an engine start (or stop) request without the user pressing the button. If the vehicle is in range and receives the request, the engine may start and run for up to 15 minutes (or until a stop request is received). The engine may continue to start and stop until the fob battery is depleted, or until the vehicle runs out of fuel. If that occurs when the vehicle is parked in an enclosed area, such as a garage, there is a risk of carbon monoxide build-up, which could result in asphyxiation or carbon monoxide poisoning. On certain vehicles equipped with a 2.5L turbo engine, the oil supply pipe to the turbocharger may crack at the stay brazing on the cylinder head-side. If the pipe cracks it will allow oil to leak and if the leaking oil contacts components operating at high temperatures, an engine compartment fire could occur. Correction: Dealers will replace the cracked pipe with a modified unit or if no crack is found an additional bracket will be installed to increase the rigidity of the pipe.

On certain vehicles, the wiring harness for the airbag occupant detection system in the front passenger seating position might have been pinched during vehicle assembly. Pinching of the wiring harness between the floor cross member and the seat mounting bracket could result in an electrical short which would blow the circuit fuse. If this happens, the passenger airbag would be unable to deploy during a crash, leaving the seat occupant susceptible to increased injuries. Correction: Dealers will inspect and, if required, repair wiring damage.

On certain vehicles, the left front bolt that retains the forward part of the driver's seat to the seat slide rail may loosen due to stress forces applied to the seat as the seat is used. If the seat slide rail retaining bolt loosens and falls out, there is the possibility that the seat may separate from the seat slide in a crash, which might cause more severe injuries to the driver. Correction: Dealers will install a new left hand driver's seat rail mounting bolt.
