Model Overview
The Ascent is Subaru's mid-size, three-row crossover model. Positioned above the Outback and shaped like a larger version of the Forester, the Ascent can accommodate adults in all three rows of seats. Large door openings make it easy to get in and out, and the Ascent boasts good ride quality. Subaru's all-wheel drive system is a winter champ, and there's a lot of well-executed standard safety kit, too.

Issue:
On certain vehicles, a hydraulic sensor in the transmission could malfunction. If this happens, the transmission may slip and cause vibrations or abnormal noises while driving. This can also cause a malfunction indicator lamp to turn on. If you continue driving, this could result in a loss of power to the wheels.
Safety Risk:
A loss of power to the wheels could increase the risk of a crash.
Corrective Actions:
Subaru will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to update the Transmission Control Unit (TCU) software. The vehicle will be inspected after a drive test, and if certain trouble codes (DTCs) are stored, the hydraulic sensor harness will also be replaced. If vehicles are confirmed to have experienced, or are currently experiencing low drive chain tension, the transmission assembly will be replaced.

Issue:
On certain vehicles, the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve could fail. If you continue to operate the vehicle after this happens, pieces of the PCV valve may enter the engine and cause an engine failure.
Safety Risk:
A sudden loss of engine power could increase the risk of a crash.
Corrective Actions:
Subaru will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to replace the PCV valve. Additionally, the replaced PCV valve will be inspected. If the valve is found to have separated, the separator cover and oil pan will be removed. If the separated parts are not located, the engine short block assembly will be replaced.
