2019 Ram ProMaster City

Buyer's Guide

You may know Fiat Chrysler Automobiles' Ram division best for its full-size pickup truck models, but this brand is also home to the company's commercial vehicles, which include the compact Promaster City van.

The Promaster City competes in a relatively new class of vehicle in North America for small vans that was kicked off by Ford's Transit Connect. Little trucks like this are everywhere in Europe but North American fleet buyers have embraced the concept, which lends itself well to jobs as varied as flower delivery and general contracting.

Functional changes for 2019 include a new standard fleet telematics system that can track vehicle usage and driver behaviour and keep track of diagnostics and performance data. The sole cosmetic change is a new grille.

Our topic here is the cargo van version of the Promaster City; there's also a passenger wagon that's covered in a separate buyer's guide entry.

Competitors here include the Transit Connect we mentioned above, as well as the Nissan NV200 and a Chevrolet clone of that sold as the City Express. Mercedes-Benz makes a van called the Metris, but it's more of a mid-size model than a direct competitor for this crowd.

The sole powertrain puts together a 2.4L four-cylinder engine (178 hp/174 lb-ft of torque) and a nine-speed automatic transmission. All Promaster City vans are front-wheel drivers.

Standard equipment in SL trim includes trip computer, backup camera, power windows, tilt-and-telescopic steering column, cloth seats, Bluetooth, air conditioning, power locks, 5.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with four-speaker stereo and two 12-volt power outlets.

SLT trim adds plastic wheel covers, body-colour side mirrors and front and rear fascia, cruise, height-adjustable driver's seat and power-adjustable and heated side mirrors.

You can option a Promaster City with navigation, rear park assist, full-size spare tire and a rear wiper/washer/defroster, among other things. The cargo van is strictly a two-seater.

Ram calls out the Promaster City's 907-kg towing capacity (which it calls "unsurpassed") and a payload rating of 862 kg.
