If the Evoque is Land Rover's play for buyers in the entry-level luxury crossover segment, the LR4 likewise goes after buyers on something of a budget, but with a focus on the off-road capability Land Rover is best known for.
New for 2015 to the LR4 are adaptive cruise control, side steps, two-tone leather seats and wood-and-leather steering wheel, a new 20-inch wheel design, and four new exterior colours.
With the pricier Range Rover and Range Rover Sport models it shares a supercharged 3.0L V6 that makes 340 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque and eight-speed automatic transmission, but it certainly doesn't share those models' prices: a base LR4 carries a $59,990 MSRP, while the most expensive version is the $72,990 HSE LUX trim. Official fuel consumption ratings are 16.2/12.1 L/100 km (city/highway).
Contributing to the LR4's off-road abilities is Terrain Response, an electronic system that adapts the car's throttle and transmission responses to a range of driver-selectable settings. A single-speed 4WD system is standard, but a two-speed transfer case with low-range gearing is optional, along with an infinitely variable locking centre differential and active rear differential.
Standard and optional features include seven-passenger seating, power front-row sunroof and fixed glass panels for second- and third-row occupants, navigation, Meridian sound systems, rear-seat entertainment.
