All-new in 2005, the Land Rover LR3 enters 2006 with a new Ford-sourced 4.0-litre V6, to go along with the existing Jaguar-sourced 4.4-litre V8.
The LR3 is available in three trim lines: the V6, and the SE and HSE, both of which use the V8. All models use a six-speed automatic transmission with CommandShift manual mode, permanent four-wheel-drive, four-corner independent, height-adjustable electronic air suspension and electronically-controlled, infinitely-variable locking centre differential. Third-row seating, for a total of seven passengers, is optional on all models.
Features on the V6 include 18-inch aluminum wheels, six airbags (eight on seven-passenger models), rear fog lamps, keyless entry, deep-tinted glass, CD player with six speakers, power adjustable seats, “Duragrain” seat fabric, dual-zone automatic climate control, heated windshield and washer jets, heated front and rear seats, leather-wrapped tilt wheel, rear washer/wiper, cruise control, programmable key fob with control over such functions as air suspension, and 65/35 split folding rear seat (a fold-flat interior is optional).
The SE adds a six-disc CD system with nine speakers and wheel-mounted controls, and leather seating.
The HSE adds 19-inch alloy wheels, Harman/Kardon Logic7 surround sound stereo with fourteen speakers and wheel-mounted controls, second- and third-row personal remote audio inputs for MP3 or iPod players, rear park distance control, and a DVD-based GPS navigation system with off-road capability
The LR3 is very capable off-road, and just in case you’re new to bushwhacking, the vehicle makes it easy. There’s a rotary knob in the centre console that can be set to general driving; grass/gravel/snow for slippery surfaces; and for off-road, a choice of mud/ruts, sand, or rock crawl. The system automatically selects the most appropriate combination of ride height, engine torque response, hill descent control, electronic traction control and transmission settings, so you can look like a pro no matter where you’re going. Of course, with all the LR3’s luxury features, only the terrain will be rough.
