For 2009, the Jeep Patriot receives a freshening-up of its interior, including a new instrument panel, door trim panel, centre console, soft-touch door armrest, carpeted load floor, illuminated cupholders, larger floor mats and interior chrome accents, and the flip pocket in the centre console armrest has been eliminated. There are also changes to the list of standard and optional features, including the availability of navigation and a new, glovebox-mounted iPod interface that allows the user to control the music device using the radio buttons.
Slotting in between the Compass and Liberty, and based on the platform used by the Jeep Compass and Dodge Caliber, the Patriot is available as the Sport, Canada-exclusive North Edition, or as the Limited. All models come standard with a 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine with five-speed manual or optional CVT transmission; the Sport and North can be optioned to a 2.0-litre four-cylinder with CVT. In all models, the front-wheel drive 2.4-litre can be optioned to one of two "Freedom Drive" active full-time four-wheel drive systems with 4WD Lock feature; the Freedom Drive II system also includes an extra-low crawl ratio feature. Unlike the Compass, the optional 4WD earns the Patriot the company's "Trail Rated" off-road designation. The 2.0-litre is available only in front-wheel drive.
Features on the Sport include 16-inch steel wheels, floor mats, cargo lamp, manual foldaway mirrors, Vinyl Tech fabric, 60/40 split-folding rear seat, CD/MP3 stereo with auxiliary input, removable carpeted cargo area load floor, tire pressure warning lamp, variable intermittent wipers, and intermittent rear washer/wiper.
The North Edition adds air conditioning, front and rear assist handles, deep-tint sunscreen glass, removable and rechargeable LED flashlight, power locks with keyless entry, power mirrors, 115-volt outlet, reclining rear seat, fold-flat front passenger seat, driver's height-adjustable seat, Stain Repel fabric, and power windows with driver's one-touch down.
The Limited adds 17-inch aluminum wheels, four-wheel disc brakes, Electronic Vehicle Information Centre, garage door opener, fog lamps, auto-dimming rearview mirror, body side bright mouldings, heated leather-faced seats, Sirius satellite radio, cruise control, and leather-wrapped wheel with audio controls.
While it looks similar to the Compass, the Patriot offers more traditional Jeep styling, a roomier feel to the interior, and with the optional four-wheel system, the company's coveted Trail Rated designation. It's not a Wrangler by any stretch of the imagination, but it should prove fine for those who want to get off the beaten track but not too far lost in the woods.
