Hyundai’s small crossover gets a notable update for model year 2014. Although the sheetmetal remains untouched, new projector beam headlamps with LED accents, and available LED tail lights give it a significantly more refined look, as do redesigned aluminum alloy wheels. The interior also gains a handful of neat upgrades including a two-stage reclining rear seat, illuminated cup holders, and floor-mounted air vents for rear-seat passengers. As with the Elantra, second-row heated seats are available, which is something of a rarity in the compact crossover segment.
But it’s under the skin where the biggest changes take place. Although the displacement is no different, the 2.0-litre and 2.4-litre engines are new, and receive gasoline direct injection as standard for improved performance and fuel-efficiency. Hyundai has also fitted its Driver Selectable Steering System with three weighting modes for the Limited, while Sachs multi-amplitude dampers are featured on all but the most basic Tucson for improved comfort over rougher roads.
The 2.0-litre engine in the Tucson develops 164 hp and 151 lb-ft of torque, and can be had with either a six-speed manual (FWD) or a six-speed automatic (FWD or AWD). The larger 2.4L makes 182 hp and 177 lb-ft of torque, and comes exclusively with a six-speed automatic. AWD is an option with this engine on the GL, and is standard on the Limited trim level. The system runs primarily in front-wheel but can be locked into 50/50 at speeds under 30 km/h.
Trim levels include GL, GLS, and Limited.
Features on the GL include 17-inch steel wheels, air conditioning, cloth seats and interior trim, 60/40 split-folding rear seats with two-stage recline, six-speaker AM/FM/CD/MP3 stereo with auxiliary, USB, iPod, and aux-in ports, tilt steering wheel, downhill brake control, hill-start assist, driver’s auto-down window, rear spoiler, variable intermittent wipers, heated front seats, power heated mirrors, projector beam headlamps with LED daytime running lights, remote keyless entry with alarm, cruise control, trip computer.
GL A/T Package adds Active Eco system, Sachs amplitude reactive dampers, rear privacy glass, side garnish, satellite radio, and wiper de-icer. AWD is an option with the GL A/T Package.
The GLS builds on the GL A/T Package and adds 17-inch alloy wheels, satellite radio, body-colour mirrors, chrome accent grille and door handles, fog lights, cloth seats with leatherette bolsters, driver’s auto-up window, heated rear seats, leather-wrapped steering wheel, tilt and telescoping steering column, illuminated sun visor, illuminated glove box, panoramic sunroof, auto-dimming rear-view mirror with integrated reverse camera, roof rack side rails. AWD is an option.
The Limited adds standard all-wheel drive, 18-inch alloy wheels, eight-way power driver’s seat with lumbar support, deluxe door scuff plates, driver selectable steering, dual-zone automatic climate control, clean air ionizer, garage door opener, 7.0-inch display audio system with navigation and reverse camera, leather upholstery, LED tail lights, mirror-mounted turn signal indicators, exterior temperature display, shark-fin antenna, solar glass, and supervision instrument cluster with 4.2-inch TFT display.
