The Hyundai Elantra Hybrid is the first-ever version of Hyundai’s compact sedan with a gas-electric powertrain. It’s part of the redesigned seventh-generation Elantra lineup introduced for the 2021 model year.
Hyundai offers the Elantra Hybrid in Preferred and Ultimate trim levels that largely mirror those of the conventional gas-powered Elantra, which is covered in a separate buyer’s guide entry.
All Elantra Hybrids are powered by a 1.6L four-cylinder engine that works with an electric motor, a six-speed automatic transmission, and front-wheel drive.
Outside, the Elantra Hybrid Preferred wears 16-inch tires on alloy wheels, LED taillights and daytime running lights, power-adjustable/heated side mirrors, auto on/off headlights, passive keyless entry, and hands-free trunk opening.
Inside, Preferred trim comes with a six-speaker stereo, an 8.0-inch infotainment display with wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, heated front seats and steering wheel, dual-zone automatic A/C, cloth seating, a 4.2-inch gauge cluster display, and leather trim for the steering wheel and shift lever.
Standard safety items include a safe exit warning, forward collision warning with pedestrian detection and automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane keeping/follow assist, automatic high beams, driver attention warning, and blind spot/rear cross traffic collision avoidance assist.
Elantra Hybrid Ultimate adds an upgraded forward collision avoidance system with cyclist and intersection turning detection, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, wireless smartphone charging, a rear-seat centre armrest with cupholders, a 10.25-inch digital gauge cluster, leather seating, a sunroof, dark chrome grille, and satin chrome window trim.
Hyundai’s fuel consumption estimates for the Elantra Hybrid are 4.5/4.2 L/100 km (city/highway).
Hyundai rolled out the Elantra Hybrid just in time to go head-to-head with the first-ever Toyota Corolla Hybrid. The only other small hybrid sedan out there today is the Civic-based Honda Insight, which has existed in its current form since 2019.
