The minivan market continues to shrink as our tastes shift to less-practical, more-stylish crossovers and SUVs, but manufacturers are not sitting back when it comes to making awesome new vans. Honda’s all-new 2018 Odyssey is a fine example – they took something that was already great and improved it on many levels. The exterior styling is evolutionary, and I guess we didn’t make a big enough deal about disliking that weird kink in the side window trim line – it’s still there. Also, my opinion is that the whole side of the vehicle looks a bit overdone – was there some sort of body crease contest I missed out on? It now looks like there’s a floating roof in the rear pillar area (that’s just a visual trick of course) and the rear sliding door tracks are masterfully hidden under the rear glass. The headlights, driving lights, and foglights are all LED and the new “bracket” LED taillight signature is very cool. My Touring trim van had handsome two-tone 19-inch rims with 235/55-sized tires.

Issue: This recall is for low-pressure fuel pumps installed on certain vehicles or sold at dealerships as a replacement part. On certain vehicles, the low-pressure fuel pump could fail. If this happens, the engine may run rough or may not start and the check engine light may turn on. This could also result in a sudden loss of engine power while driving. Note: This is an expansion of Transport Canada recall nos. 2020-236 and 2021-182. Safety Risk: A sudden loss of engine power could increase the risk of a crash. Corrective Actions: The company will notify owners by mail and advise you to take your vehicle to a dealership to replace the fuel pump motor.

Issue: On certain vehicles, the terminals on the coaxial cable for the audio display unit may not have been manufactured correctly. As a result, the audio display unit could lose its connection, and the rearview camera image may not display when the transmission is shifted into reverse gear. Safety Risk: A rearview camera image that doesn't display could reduce a driver's ability to see behind the vehicle while backing up. This could increase the risk of a crash. Corrective Actions: Honda will notify owners by mail and advise you to take your vehicle to a dealership to replace the media oriented systems transport (MOST) cable harness, and install a cover over the audio display unit connector.

Issue: On certain vehicles, the seat belt buckles for the driver and front-passenger seats could wear over time and may not latch securely. If this happens, the seat belt could unlatch unexpectedly. Safety Risk: A seat belt that doesn't latch securely could create an increased risk of injury in a crash. Corrective Actions: Honda will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealership to inspect the driver and front-passenger seat belt assemblies. In most cases, the seat belt buckle release buttons will be replaced. If the dealer determines that a buckle can't be repaired, it will be replaced with a new part.

Issue: On certain vans converted for wheelchair access by BraunAbility, the fuel tank can be overfilled and fuel can enter the charcoal canister. If this happens, fuel can leak from the canister onto nearby components and the ground. Note: This problem only affects Honda Odyssey wheelchair vans with a power infloor side-entry ramp, which were altered between September 13, 2018 and December 3, 2020. Safety Risk: A fuel leak can create the risk of a fire. Corrective Actions: BraunAbility will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a BraunAbility service center for an inspection. If there is evidence of a fuel leak, the dealer will install a new fuel tank assembly that has a different fill limit vent valve. The dealer will also replace the charcoal canister. A warning label will be applied on or near the fuel filler neck advising you not to overfill or "top off" the fuel tank.

Issue: On certain vehicles, there is a programming error in the instrument panel control module. This could cause the instrument panel not display certain information, such as the vehicle speed, engine oil pressure, and gear selector position. This can also cause the rearview camera image not to display. Safety Risk: An instrument panel that does not work or a rearview camera image that does not display could increase the risk of a crash. Corrective Actions: Honda will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to reprogram the instrument panel control module.

Issue: On certain vehicles, moisture can freeze in the door handle cables for the rear sliding doors. If this happens, the door handle could stick in the open position. This can cause the door not latch properly when it is closed. As a result, the door could open while driving. Safety Risk: A door that opens while driving could create a risk of injury. Corrective Actions: Honda will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to replace the cables for the outer handles on the power sliding doors.

Issue: On certain vehicles, the wiring for the accessory power outlet located near the third-row seat could get pinched. This could result in a short circuit, and cause overheating of the wiring harness. Safety Risk: Wiring that overheats could create the risk of a fire. Corrective Actions: Honda will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to inspect the wire harness for the third-row seat accessory power outlet. If it is damaged, it will be replaced. If no damage is found, the wire harness will be wrapped with protective tape and re-routed.

Issue: On certain vehicles, a low-voltage condition caused by a loose battery connection or a low battery could cause a problem with the Transmission Control Module (TCM). If this happens, the transmission could shift to Park (P) while driving. This could cause damage to the transmission park pawl. As a result, when the transmission is shifted to P, the vehicle could move if the parking brake is not applied. Safety Risk: A damaged transmission could allow a parked vehicle to move if the parking brake is not applied. This could increase the risk of a crash. Corrective Actions: Honda will mail a letter to owners asking them to take their vehicle to a Honda Automobile dealer. The dealer will ensure the battery terminals are secure and update the TCM with the latest software. If the parking gear cannot hold the vehicle in Park without application of the electronic parking brake, the transmission will be replaced.

On certain vehicles, the rear latch assemblies on the power sliding doors may stick. This could cause a door not to close fully, and in certain circumstances, the door may open unexpectedly while the vehicle is in motion. This could create a risk of injury to the occupants. Correction: Dealers will replace the rear latch assemblies on both sliding doors. In the interim, until vehicles can be completely repaired, dealers will disable the power opening and closing functions to prevent a door from opening unexpectedly.

Certain vehicles may fail to conform to Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (CMVSS) 135 - Light Vehicle Brake Systems. A problem with the rear brake system may cause gas bubbles to form in the brake fluid. This could cause a soft brake pedal feel and a reduction in brake performance, increasing the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will bleed the rear brakes.

Certain vehicles may fail to comply with the requirements of Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (CMVSS) 208 - Occupant Protection in Frontal Impacts. During vehicle assembly, an outer seat belt position seat belt tongue may have been incorrectly installed onto the third row seating centre seat belt assembly. This would result in the seat belt tongue not latching when inserted in the centre seat belt buckle, and therefore would be non-compliant with the standard. In the event of a crash, an unlatched seatbelt may increase the risk of injury to the seat occupant. Correction: Dealers will inspect the third row centre seat belt for the correct tongue and replace as necessary.
