The GMC Sierra HD is the heavy-duty pickup for drivers who need more capacity and capability than the more common, light-duty 1500 can offer. This is the fourth model year for this current, fifth-generation version of the truck.
What’s New/Key Changes From Last Year
There are no changes to the Sierra HD range for 2023; we were expecting a significant refresh, but that has been put off until 2024.
The GMC Sierra HD comes in Pro, SLE, SLT, AT4, and Denali trims. You can get two- or four-wheel drive; regular, Double Cab and Crew Cab configurations; and standard and long beds sizes. The standard powertrain is a 6.6L gas V8 and a six-speed automatic transmission, the option being a 6.6L diesel/10-speed auto combination.
Sierra HD Pro gets a 7.0-inch touchscreen, smartphone integration, LED headlights, 17-inch wheels, bed steps, trailering side mirrors, cargo lights/tie-downs, and chrome bumpers. The seats and floors are finished in vinyl, and there’s a six-speaker stereo.
SLE trim brings a trailer brake controller, a MultiPro tailgate, leather-wrapped wheel, cruise control, keyless entry, and satellite radio.
SLT gains 18-inch wheels, LED bed lights and fog lamps, power folding/extending side mirrors, hitch guidance, trailering app, and an easy-lift tailgate. Inside, there are power-adjustable heated seats, a heated steering wheel, 8.0-inch infotainment screen, dual-zone A/C, and passive keyless entry.
AT4 gets all-terrain tires, an off-road suspension system, skid plates, perforated leather, red recovery hooks, and heated rear seats.
Finally, Denali adds interior trim in open-pore wood, aluminum and chrome, a Bose stereo, bed-view camera, front and rear parking sensors, lane change alert, forward collision mitigation, and rear cross traffic alert.
A convenience package for Pro trim adds tinted glass, keyless entry, LED bed lights, and rear window defogger.
Driver alert I brings front/rear park assist, lane change/blind spot/rear cross traffic alerts, and perimeter lighting.
The safety confidence pack adds forward collision mitigation and cruise.
An SLE convenience bundle gets a power driver’s seat, passive keyless entry, heated front seats, and dual-zone A/C. The driver alert II pack bundles automatic high beams and lane departure warning. SLT premium gets a power sliding rear window, ventilated seats, surround view cameras, navigation, and Bose audio.
AT4 premium plus offers bed view and surround view cameras, and a sunroof. Denali gains power side steps, trailer TPMS, a camera-based rearview mirror, and a driver head-up display.
Finally, Ultimate brings surround vision, the digital rearview mirror, a head-up display, and a sunroof.
Natural Resources Canada does not require truck manufacturers to publish fuel consumption estimates for heavy-duty pickups.
The GMC Sierra 2500 HD’s competitors are the Chevrolet Silverado HD, Ford F-Series Super Duty models, and Ram’s 2500 and 3500 Heavy Duty models.
