m0nk3ynutZ Great Family SUV for 7 years... and then all hell broke loose! April 03, 2019 LTZ
Overall Score
The 2012 Traverse LTZ had a sticker price of $53000 and for 7 years, it was worth every penny. Great comfort and styling with no real issues other than a couple of brake jobs and tires. Unfortunately this didn't last as the past 6 months have been a nightmare. When things go on this vehicle... everything goes at once! Power steering pump went first.. Then check engine light went on (O2 sensor). Front suspension went. This culminated with the timing chain going and the sudden detonation of the engine. Scrap yard told me these trucks (Traverse, Equinox, Terrains, etc.) are absolute junk. Tow truck driver told me that he's never towed away a vehicle this nice and new for scrap. $53K to $650 in less than 7 years. Brutal!

Issue: On a small number of vehicles, the right or left roof rail airbag may not be properly attached to the vehicle. As a result, the airbags may not work properly in a crash. Safety Risk: An airbag that does not work properly could create an increased risk of injury in a crash. Corrective Actions: General Motors will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to inspect the roof rail airbag attachments. The dealer will add or replace any attachments that are missing, damaged or out of position.

Issue: Certain vehicles were built with tires that may have been cured too long. As a result, the sidewall could crack or the tread and belts could separate. This could lead to a sudden loss of air pressure and could cause a tire failure. Note: This recall only affects vehicles equipped with certain Continental tires, with specific date codes and mold numbers. Safety Risk: A tire failure could cause a loss of control and increase the risk of a crash. Corrective Actions: General Motors will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to inspect the tires and replace the ones that have the DOT number and production mold number combinations identified by Continental.

Issue: On certain vehicles, the start-stop accumulator in the transmission may be missing bolts. As a result, transmission fluid could leak and eventually cause the transmission to stop working. If this happens, there could be a loss of power to the wheels. Safety Risk: A transmission fluid leak onto a hot surface can create the risk of a fire. Additionally, a loss of power to the wheels could increase the risk of a crash. Corrective Actions: General Motors will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to inspect the transmission start-stop accumulator. It will be replaced if any bolts are found missing.

On certain vehicles equipped with a power liftgate system, the gas-filled struts (which help to raise and support the liftgate) may prematurely wear. These vehicles have a Prop Rod Recovery system intended to accomplish a controlled, slow return of the liftgate to the closed position if the liftgate’s gas struts are no longer capable of supporting the weight of the liftgate. The vehicle would provide audible warnings and flash the tail lamps to indicate there is a problem. However, the liftgate’s Prop Rod Recovery system software may be unable to detect/stop a liftgate with prematurely worn gas struts from falling too quickly after the liftgate is opened. This could allow the liftgate to drop suddenly, placing anyone beneath or near the gate at risk of injury. Correction: Dealers will reprogram the power liftgate actuator motor ECU with a new software and will verify power liftgate operation following the reprogram.

Certain vehicles may be equipped with tires that may not comply with Canadian Motor Vehicle Tire Safety Regulations. During the inspection phase of routine tire compliance testing, cracks were observed in the tire's tread. This is contrary to the requirements of the standard. This could result in tire noise, ride vibration and/or tread chunking. Tires operated in this condition could be at greater risk of failure, increasing the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will replace affected tires.

On certain vehicles, the chassis electronic module may have been contaminated at time of manufacture, which could cause an electrical short to occur within the module. This could cause the vehicle's check engine light to be displayed, or cause the engine to fail to start or stall, resulting in a loss of motive power. If the vehicle is equipped to support electric trailer brakes, the vehicle could also lose trailer brake function and display a "Service Trailer Brake System" indicator. These issues could increase the risk of a crash resulting in injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will replace the module with a revised part.

On certain vehicles, side airbag wiring connections could develop high resistance, illuminating the airbag warning light. If the vehicle continues to be operated in this condition, resistance may continue to increase over time and eventually cause the seat side airbags and seat belt pretensioners to not deploy in the event of a crash, which could increase the risk of injury. On certain vehicles, if a buildup of snow or ice on the windshield or on the wipers restricts the movement of the wiper arm, the wiper arm nut may loosen and cause that wiper to become inoperative. Loss of windshield wiping capability, should it occur during a rainy/snowy day, may compromise the driver's ability to see the road and its users, which could result in a crash causing property damage and/or personal injury. Correction: Dealers will tighten the wiper arm nuts.

On certain vehicles, the second row seat side trim shield may restrict the upward rotation of the safety belt buckle when the seat back is returned to a seating position after being folded flat. If the buckle contacts the seat frame, additional effort is required to return the seat to a seating position. If sufficient force is applied, the buckle cover could be pushed down the strap, exposing and partially depressing the red release button. As a result, the release button will not travel as much as designed when depressed and will appear to be jammed. The buckle cover may have visible damage which may only be cosmetic, but in some cases, the buckle may not latch/unlatch, or may appear to latch when the latch mechanism is not fully engaged. If the latch mechanism is not fully engaged, the safety belt may not restrain the occupant as intended in a crash, which could result in personal injury or death. Correction: Dealers will modify the second row seat side trim shields, inspect the belt buckle and will replace it if damaged.

On certain vehicles equipped with a Heated Washer Fluid System (HWFS), a short circuit on the printed circuit board for the washer fluid heater may overheat the control-circuit ground wire. A repair was implemented in a recall in 2008, however, there have been new reports of thermal incidents on heated washer fluid system modules after this improvement was installed. This situation may cause some minor distortion, but also could lead to melting of the plastic around the heated washer fluid system, or cause a fire. Correction: Dealers will permanently disable and remove the heated washer fluid module. An updated page will be provided and inserted in the Owner Manual to document the removal of the feature.

On certain vehicles, the park brake cable link (connector) may fracture when the park brake pedal is depressed. Should the vehicle be parked on a sufficient slope, and the transmission shift lever be in any position other than PARK, it may result in unintended vehicle movement which could cause a vehicle crash resulting in property damage, personal injury or death. Correction: Dealers will replace the park brake cable link (connector).

On certain vehicles, the transmission shift cable adjustment clip may not be fully engaged. Should this occur, the shift lever and the actual position of the transmission gear may not match. As such, the driver could move the shifter to PARK and remove the ignition key, but the transmission gear may not actually be in the PARK position. This could allow the vehicle to roll away, possibly causing property damage and/or personal injury or death. Correction: Dealers will inspect and, if required, replace the shift cable.

Certain vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of CMVSS 209 - Seatbelt Assemblies. These vehicles may have been assembled with a safety belt buckle in the second or third row that is missing a rivet. In a vehicle crash, this could allow the buckle to separate from the mounting strap. As a result, the seat occupant may not be restrained as intended, which could cause personal injury or death. Correction: Dealers will inspect the seatbelt buckles in the second and third rows, and replace them if necessary.
