Chevrolet’s Camaro is quite possibly the most anticipated new car of 2016. The evolution of this iconic pony car sees it maintain a familiar look, but underneath it’s an entirely new vehicle.
The new Camaro shares its underpinnings with the critically acclaimed Cadillac ATS. The move to the Alpha platform sees the Camaro shrink by about five centimetres in length, and two in width, and shed a boatload of weight. Depending on which engine is selected, it tips the scales between 100 and 130 kilos less than the outgoing model.
This has had a drastic effect on the way the Camaro drives; the steering is sharp, the car is less prone to understeer, and it feels lighter and nimbler than its chief rival, the Mustang. This hasn’t come at the cost of comfort – the ride is quite supple for a sports car wearing such large wheels. Magnetic dampers are an option for the SS.
The Camaro is being offered with three engines, mirroring the basic lineup of the Mustang. A turbocharged four cylinder, a naturally aspirated V6, and a good ‘ol fashioned pushrod V8 are all on offer – the latter belting out a full-bodied 455 hp and 455 lb-ft of torque. All feature direct fuel injection, and the V6 and V8 use cylinder deactivation to save fuel. A six-speed manual comes standard (with rev-matching downshifts), with an eight-speed automatic available as an option.
Inside, the Camaro keeps its wild styling, but Chevrolet has doubled down on quality, fitting more soft-touch plastics, plus nifty detailing like configurable ambient lighting and circular vents that do double duty to control the heating and ventilation. The latest version of Chevrolet’s MyLink infotainment system provides the latest in-car connectivity including LTE WiFi and Apple CarPlay. Visibility is still lacking, and the rear quarters are still cramped – even compared to the Mustang.
The 2016 Chevrolet Camaro is initially available as a Coupe in 1LT, 2LT, 1SS, and 2SS trims. A convertible will join the range later this year.
