At GM, there are generally two versions of full-size SUVs; the base model and the extended version. These models share just about all their mechanical components, their interiors and their equipment levels.

At Chevrolet, we're talking about the Tahoe and Suburban. GMC has the Yukon and Yukon XL. In the Cadillac lineup, we're talking about the Escalade and the Escalade XL.

No major changes for the long version of the Escalade in 2019; aside from a transmission change last year (the eight-speed gave way to a ten-speed), the big SUV remains largely unchanged.

That's not a bad thing: it still comes with its big 6.2-litre V8 developing 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque. All-wheel drive is still standard, as are low range and the auto-locking rear differential. The Escalade ESV can tow up to 3,600 kilos when properly equipped.

The Escalade ESV's fuel consumption isn't so dismal on the highway (10.9 litres per 100 km); we can thank the cylinder deactivation system—which cuts fuel supply and ignition to four of the eight cylinders when power demand is lower—as well as the new transmission. In the city however, the big SUV can't escape its weight and aerodynamics resembling that of a wall; it can't do better than 16.6 litres per 100 km.

The main difference between the Escalade and the Escalade ESV is found inside; thanks to a wheelbase of 3,302 mm and a total length of 5.7 metres, the SUV offers more space for rear passengers. This allows it not only to accommodate up to eight passengers in princely comfort, but also to offer up to 3.4 cubic metres of cargo space.

For even more luxury, you can turn to the Platinum variant; available on both the Escalade and Escalade ESV, it offers automatically retracting running boards, heated, ventilated and massaging front seats (which adjust in 18 positions), tri-zone automatic climate control as well as no fewer than three entertainment screens. The first two are placed behind the front seat headrests, while the third unfolds from the ceiling to entertain the second and third rows. The Platinum version is recognizable by its 22-inch wheels and unique grille.
