Introduced in 2010, the BMW X5 M was the brand’s first attempt at extending its M line of performance-oriented models into SUV territory. Last year marked the arrival of the third-generation X5 M.
What’s New/Key Changes From Last Year
For 2021, all X5 M models (initially, at least) come standard with a Competition package that was optional last year. Also, the iDrive infotainment system now supports the Android Auto smartphone platform.
The BMW X5 M comes in a single trim. Power is from a 4.4L twin-turbo V8 matched with an eight-speed transmission and AWD.
Outside, the X5 M wears 21-inch front and 22-inch rear wheels with performance tires, an M Sport exhaust, an active differential, adaptive suspension with roll stabilization, remote engine start, a power tailgate, passive keyless entry, soft-close doors, and laser light headlights.
Inside, you get a universal garage door remote, a panoramic sunroof, velour floor mats, multifunction power seats with driver memory, heated front and rear seats, leather seating and dash trim, four-zone climate control, ambient lighting, a head-up driver display, satellite radio, a surround-sound stereo, Android Auto/Apple CarPlay connectivity, and a black Alcantara headliner.
The standard safety kit comprises tire pressure monitoring, automatic high beams, blind spot monitoring, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, rear cross traffic alert, parking sensors, parking assist, adaptive cruise control, and forward collision alert with city-speed automatic braking.
A premium package adds BMW’s display key, plus surround-view cameras, a drive recorder, a fragrance dispenser, heated/cooled cupholders, ventilated seats, wireless smartphone charging, massaging front seats, a traffic jam assistant, all-speed collision avoidance assist, and side sun shades.
An ultimate package builds on the premium pack with a carbon fibre engine cover and side mirrors caps, and a choice of carbon fibre, piano black or aluminum trim.
BMW’s fuel consumption estimates for the X5 M are 17.9/13.0 L/100 km (city/highway).
