The BMW X5 M takes the sport part of sport utility vehicle and charges head-on without paying much attention to the utility part of the equation. The large SUV takes the luxury of the X5 and transforms it into something that's more at home on a race track than a dirt track, and will invariably end up as the fastest thing at the mall. The hot-rodded SUV loses the off-road modes of the standard X5, but with 285/40 20-inch tires up front, and steamroller 325/30 21's in the rear, there was no point in putting it off-road in the first place. The X5 M gets a twin-turbo 4.4L V8 that makes a massive 567 hp and 553 lb-ft and routes it through an eight-speed automatic. It's less car-like than the Porsche Cayenne, but better at it than the Range Rover Sport SVR. It also has better transmission tuning that that pair. It offers 99% of the performance of the Porsche at about 60% of the price, and if you want a more coupe-like body, take a look at the BMW X6 M.
The X5 M comes standard with LED fog lights, panoramic sunroof, power adjustable seats with adjustable thigh bolster, heated seats front and rear with a heated steering wheel, leather dash, adaptive suspension, head-up display, automatic high beams, front and rear parking sensors with rear-view camera, four-zone climate control, power split tailgate, navigation, and a Harman Kardon surround sound stereo. There are also several colours of leather and interior trims to pick from. An available Premium pack offers manual rear sunshades, ventilated M sport seats, lane departure and collision warning with blind spot monitors and surround-view camera, speed limit info, and satellite radio.
The X5 M is rated for 16.6 L/100 km city and 12.1 highway.
