For 2007, the Acura CSX receives a new performance version, the CSX Type-S. As with all CSX models, it is exclusive to the Canadian market. All other CSX models receive MP3 capability and an auxiliary input jack on their audio systems.
The CSX shares its platform and much of its appearance with the Honda Civic. All models use a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine that makes 155 hp in the base and Premium levels, and 197 hp in the Type-S. The CSX uses a five-speed manual transmission that can be optioned to a five-speed automatic, while the Type-S uses a close-coupled six-speed manual.
The Touring includes 16-inch alloy wheels, anti-lock brakes, side and curtain airbags, heated mirrors with integrated turn signals, leather-wrapped wheel with audio controls, CD/MP3 player, automatic climate control, cruise control, auto up/down windows, and 60/40 folding rear seat.
The Premium adds leather interior, heated seats, high-intensity discharge headlights, six-CD stereo, and power sunroof. An optional navigation system with bilingual voice recognition can be added to the Premium model only.
The Type-S includes 17-inch alloy wheels, stability and traction control, sport-tuned suspension, standard satellite-linked navigation system, premium CD/MP3 stereo, rear spoiler, fog lights, leather-trimmed seats with high-contrast stitching and Type-S logos, metallic-finished pedals, and S-specific badges.
Like the Civic, the CSX is a well-balanced and solid little car, with sporty flavour and decent handling characteristics. The Type-S is a welcome addition, adding extra power and performance with an upgraded interior. All models are a good stepping-stone for those who prefer the Acura’s larger engine and sportier performance, but don’t want to stray too far beyond Civic prices.
