For 2009, the Volvo S60 slims down to two models, with the discontinuation of the 2.4-litre turbocharged T5 model. The 2.5T and 2.5T AWD models have lower prices than their 2008 counterparts, but with standard leather seating and fog lights, which were previously optional.
The previous Premium and Convenience Package is replaced with a new Luxury Package, adding 17-inch alloy wheels, dual Xenon Active Bending Headlights, retractable sideview mirrors, colour-coordinated door handles, leather and aluminum wheel, "Inscription" leather seats, power passenger seat, watch-style instrument gauges, garage door opener, speed-sensitive steering, rain sensor, mass movement sensor, level sensor and auto-dimming rearview mirror with compass. As well, updated software in the optional Navigation System with Real Time Traffic updates will be better able to avoid traffic by customizing the drive route around known obstructions that have been digitally transmitted to the system's receiver; the new program is available in Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa, and in Vancouver in late 2008.
The S60 uses a turbocharged 2.5-litre five-cylinder engine mated to a five-speed automatic transmission with manual shift mode. The 2.5T is front-wheel drive; the 2.5T AWD uses an electronically-controlled all-wheel system with Instant Traction.
Features on the 2.5T include 16-inch alloy wheels, dual-zone automatic climate control, dynamic chassis tuning, front and rear fog lights, headlamp washers, heated mirrors, three-spoke leather-wrapped wheel with integrated audio controls, 60/40 split-folding rear seatbacks, heated leather seats, cruise control, illuminated vanity mirrors, power windows with front auto up/down, variable intermittent wipers, and CD stereo.
The 2.5T AWD adds power sunroof and power driver's seat with memory.
While driving enthusiasts will mourn the loss of the stick-shift-equipped T5, the S60 remains the "quintessential Volvo", slotted between the smaller S40 and the more expensive S80. The ride is firm and interior space is a bit tighter than many competitors, but build quality is excellent, the seats are comfortable and the package is very well done, especially with the reduction in price.
