History/Overview
BMW launched the 2 Series in 2014 to replace the fundamentally very similar 1 Series. At the same time, BMW turned the 1 Series into a hatchback-only line not destined for North America.
The 2 Series added convertible and AWD options in 2015. Four- and six-cylinder cars were initially called 228i and 235i but were renamed 230i and M240i in 2017, and a styling refresh followed in 2018.
What's New / Key Changes from Last Year
All 2 Series variants -- 230i and M240i in coupe and cabriolet forms -- carry over into 2020 with no major changes.
Available Trims
BMW offers the 2 Series Coupe as the 230i and M240i with rear- and all-wheel drive. In cabriolet form, the 230i is standard with AWD, and the M240i comes with rear- or all-wheel drive.
The 230i’s engine is a turbocharged four-cylinder making 248 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. M240i uses a turbo 3.0L six-cylinder good for 335 hp and 369 lb-ft.
An eight-speed automatic transmission is standard in most trims save for the M240i and its six-speed manual, which is a no-cost option in the 230i coupe.
Standard Features
The 230i comes with 18-inch wheels, black leatherette upholstery, LED fog lights and headlights, an M aerodynamics package, rear spoiler, sliding front armrest, heated front seats, leather-trimmed steering wheel and sport seats.
M240i models get an adaptive M suspension, high-performance tires, sport brakes, variable sport steering and rain-sensing wipers.
Key Options
Options in the 230i include an M Performance package, and a Premium Package Essential of a sunroof, power seats with memory, auto-dimming rearview mirror, heated steering wheel, passive keyless entry and a garage door opener. A Premium Package Enhanced builds on that with rear parking sensors, navigation, BMW connected services and Apple CarPlay.
M240i option packages are limited to the two premium groups listed above.
Fuel Economy
As of this writing, BMW’s hadn’t published fuel consumption estimates for the 2020 2 Series. However, they should be similar to those for the 2019 model. Last year, the 230i xDrive coupe was rated 9.9/7.1 L/100 km (city/highway), and the cabriolet was marginally thirstier. Meanwhile, M240i xDrive models started at 11.2/7.8 with RWD and 11.3 / 8.0 with AWD. Rear-drive M240i models with the manual transmission were rated 12.8/8.8 L/100 km.
Competition
With the 2 Series, BMW primarily goes up against the Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class and the Audi A3 and S3.
If you’re not picky whether the front or rear wheels do the work, a Volkswagen GTI boasts power similar to the 230i, while the AWD Golf R is closer to the M240i. You might also cross-shop a 2 Series with the BMW-built Mini Cooper in its most potent JCW form.
