Overview
The Q5 is Audi’s entry in the luxury compact crossover segment, which was most recently redesigned in 2018.
What’s New/Key Changes From Last Year
For 2021, the Q5 gets a styling update that includes a new grille and bumpers, new wheel designs, and revised head- and taillights.
The base powertrain is Audi’s new 12-volt mild hybrid setup, which adds a few horsepower. The more potent plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain also gets a small boost in output.
Other changes include a standard 10.1-inch infotainment touchscreen, lane departure warning, LED headlights, rear-seat USB charging ports, wireless Apple CarPlay, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror with compass and integrated garage door remote.
Available Trims
Audi offers the Q5 in Komfort, Progressiv and Technik trim levels. You can get all three with the entry-level 45 mild hybrid powertrain, while Progressiv and Technik option up to a more powerful 55 variant with a plug-in hybrid system. Both use a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and Quattro AWD.
Standard Features
The Q5 45 Komfort’s exterior comes with 18-inch wheels and tires, heated/power-adjustable side mirrors, all-weather lights, aluminum roof rails, a power tailgate, auto on/off LED headlights and taillights, and high-gloss window trim.
Inside, there’s a 10.1-in touchscreen, Bluetooth, a 10-speaker stereo, power front seats with driver lumbar, cruise control, three-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats, push-button ignition, rear-seat USB charge ports, leather seating, Apple CarPlay, satellite radio, a 7.0-inch driver info display, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror.
Safety kit includes blind spot monitoring, lane departure warning, city-speed forward collision detection with automatic braking, rear-end collision detection, exit warning, and tire pressure monitoring.
Progressiv trim adds 19-inch wheels, the virtual cockpit digital gauge cluster, lighted door sills, a heated steering wheel, aluminum inlays, automatic high beams, passive keyless entry with hands-free tailgate, rear cross traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors, power-folding side mirrors, navigation, panoramic sunroof, an integrated garage door remote, and driver’s seat memory.
Technik brings LED matrix headlights, heated/cooled cupholders, heated rear seats, headlight washers, a Bang & Olufsen stereo, power-adjustable steering column, dynamic LED taillights, ambient interior lighting, and a top-view camera.
Key Options
Komfort trim can be optioned with a Convenience Package of a heated steering wheel, front and rear parking sensors, driver’s seat memory, passive keyless, hands-free tailgate, power-folding side mirrors, and rear cross traffic alert.
The S line Sport Package adds 20-inch wheels, sport seats, a black headliner, stainless steel pedals, brushed aluminum trim, and front-seat power lumbar. There’s also an S line Black Package.
A Comfort Interior Package gets sport seats, front-seat lumbar, ventilated seats, and rear-door sun shades.
The Advanced Driver Assistance Package adds adaptive cruise, traffic sign recognition, full-speed forward collision detection with automatic braking, active lane assist, traffic congestion assist, and hands-on detection.
The Q5 55 adds the option of a Black Optics package that adds gloss black exterior trim.
Fuel Economy
As of this writing, Audi had not published fuel consumption estimates for its 2021 models. However, they should be similar to those for the 2020 model, whose figures were 10.7/8.4 L/100 km (city/highway) for the 45 model and, for the 55 PHEV variant, 9.5/8.1 when running as a hybrid, and 3.6 Le/100 km when driving on electricity.
Competition
The Audi Q5 faces numerous competitors, like the BMW X3, Mercedes-Benz’s GLC, the Acura RDX, Volvo’s XC60, the Infiniti QX50, Cadillac’s XT5, Lexus’s NX, the Lincoln Corsair, Buick’s Envision, Jaguar’s E-Pace, and the Land Rover Discovery.
