Ford has just revealed a refreshed version of its Expedition three-row SUV. The 2022 Ford Expedition gets a facelift as well as a new display screen inside, but Ford is also adding new infotainment, new driver assistance features, and a pair of new trim levels. The first is an off-road-ready Timberline trim, the second a new Stealth Edition Performance package with a more powerful V6 and monochromatic styling.

Styling changes are most prominent at the nose, where Ford has gone with a more aggressive split-bar for the centre of the grille. It crosses over the headlights all the way to the fenders and frames the new lamps. Look extra closely and you might see the new air dam that deploys above 65 km/h to help improve fuel economy.

The most notable change inside is the newly available 15.5-inch vertical screen. It's the same screen as is available in the new F-150, and Ford calls it the largest in the segment. It offers Sync 4A infotainment that uses interactive cards instead of traditional menus. Standard is Sync 4 on a 12-inch screen. A new Bang & Olufsen audio system is also added to top trims that gets 22 speakers. The new infotainment system allows Ford Power-Up, the brand's over-the-air vehicle enhancements.

Ford is only offering the 3.5L turbocharged V6 in the Expedition, along with a 10-speed automatic, but it will come in two options. A standard version will likely make the same 375 hp as last year (Ford didn't specify for the 2022 version) and a new High Output engine standard on the Stealth Performance model and optional on the Platinum model will make 440 hp and 510 lb-ft. Ford says maximum towing is 9,300 lbs, 100 more than the previous model. The company also says a surprisingly high percentage of owners use their SUVs for towing.

The Timberline trim was first revealed on the Explorer earlier this year and the off-road trim will be coming to the Expedition soon. It will have a special grille, unique accents, and a green interior, but will also get functional changes like the High Output engine, 33-inch all-terrain tires, low-range transfer case, and Trail Turn Assist braking to tighten off-road corners when you're taking it down narrow two-tracks. It will also wear the same skid plate found under the F-150 Raptor for powertrain protection.

The second new Expedition is the Stealth Edition Performance Package. This one adds the 440-hp engine as well as a continuously variable suspension with Road Preview. It's meant to offer sportier handling than the standard model, but the gloss-black grille, mirrors, roof racks, and 22-inch wheels (along with the High Output engine) are probably much of the appeal of the model.

New standard driver assistance includes road edge detection, new intersection assist designed to prevent oncoming crashes during left turns, reverse brake assist, and evasive steering assist. The Expedition Platinum will offer Ford's BlueCruise hands-off highway driving assistance feature.

Pricing for the 2022 Ford Expedition hasn't been announced yet but the automaker said that the SUV would go on sale in the first quarter of next year.
