The new 2022 Toyota 86 has just been revealed with fresh looks, more power, and a new name. A GR, which stands for Gazoo Racing, has been added to the name, joining the GR Supra and GR Yaris, but as far as the changes go, it gets much of the same improvements we've already seen on the upcoming 2022 Subaru BRZ with which it shares plenty of parts.
Toyota says that it has gone to great lengths to differentiate the two models, though, saying that "the new GR 86 is specially designed for sports performance, and provides direct and satisfying driving performance of the highest order."
For the GR 86, the biggest change from the previous model is the 2.4L four-cylinder engine replacing the old 2.0L version. The rear-drive coupe now gets 232 hp, an increase from around 200 hp, and 184 lb-ft of torque (up from 156 lb-ft), which cuts a full second from the zero-to-100 km/h time. It should also make what was already a well-balanced machine even easier to coax out the tail, should that be something you wanted to do on a closed circuit. A six-speed manual or six-speed auto will be available.
According to Toyota, the dimensions are nearly unchanged, but the centre of gravity has been lowered through the use of more aluminum in the roof and fenders. The car is also 50 per cent more rigid, better allowing the suspension to do its job, which Toyota says will improve agility and steering stability.
Driver safety assistance features will be from the Subaru EyeSight system rather than Toyota's Safety Sense, with automatic gearbox models getting pre-collision safety tech, collision avoidance support, and post-crash emergency services support. Like the BRZ, a new interior includes a 7.0-inch new touchscreen and what looks to be a digital dash display. The interior gains new Gazoo Racing trim including a logo on the steering wheel. The new 2022 Toyota GR 86 is set to launch in Japan this fall, and we expect it in Canada not long after.
