2022 Hyundai Kona N Performance Crossover on the Way

The Hyundai Kona lineup is set to get a whole lot more exciting with the impending arrival of the 2022 Hyundai Kona N performance variant.

The Korean automaker confirmed this week that the Kona N will be the next addition to the budding N performance portfolio when it launches later this year. The performance crossover will pair a powerful 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine with a quick-shifting eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and other performance-boosting tech such as electronic launch control. Hyundai has not said if the crossover will be front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.

“As N brand’s first ‘hot SUV,’ Kona N will offer plenty of versatility and driving thrills that N-thusiasts have come to expect from the brand," said N brand boss Till Wartenberg. "You can take this vehicle anywhere — from road to the track."

Hyundai is keeping key performance metrics like horsepower and torque output under wraps for now, but the only other N product currently for sale in Canada, the Veloster N, can probably give us a rough idea of what to expect. In Canada, the Veloster N comes standard with a turbocharged 2.0-litre engine producing 275 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. We expect the Kona N to have similar power and torque output, but let's wait and see what Hyundai has in store for us.

The automaker also released a handful of teaser images of a camouflaged Kona N prototype, which appears to feature a revised front fascia, side skirts, a different rear bumper, large dual exhausts, black-painted alloy wheels with low profile tires and larger brakes with red N-branded brake calipers.
