After previewing the hotly-anticipated new SUV in October, the 2022 Genesis GV70 has fully debuted as the second crossover for the brand competing in one of the most important segments in the luxury market. The fifth model from the brand fills out the lineup with a healthy dose of the style that's quickly become part of the Genesis calling card.
It starts with what the luxury Korean brand calls its Crest Grille, the large pentagonal mesh grille that's flanked by the double-stacked headlights that are now a signature for all Genesis models. The side profile is uniquely GV70, starting with a sharp crease running down the body from the edge of the hood to the rear quad-taillights. It's what's above that, though, that really makes the GV70 stand out, even if it won't be to every taste. The small and oddly-shaped D-pillar glass will be divisive, but at least Genesis has tried something different.
The 2022 Genesis GV70 will come to Canada with a 2.5L turbocharged four-cylinder as standard, with a 3.5L twin-turbo V6 optional. The automaker didn't provide power figures in the Canadian release, but these are the same displacements as the GV80's engines, so expect something similar to the 300 hp for the entry model and 375 hp for the V6 that the bigger sibling offers. All-wheel drive will be standard while a Sport Package will add new drive modes along with blackout trim and other special detailing.
Inside is an oval-filled dash, including a two-spoke steering wheel and trim that runs from the driver's door around to the passenger side which contains ventilation controls. Genesis says it's inspired by the section of an aircraft wing, with a large infotainment screen topping the dash. Genesis says it "visualizes rich volume by applying uniquely elliptical elements as the main interior theme."
Driver assistance tech includes Highway Driving Assist II, which can handle automated lane changes responding to your signal as well as respond to your being cut off. Intelligent Speed Limit Assist controls vehicle speed based on local speed limits, and even works on models without navigation thanks to traffic sign reading cameras, while navigation-based smart cruise control will handle those speed changes as well as slow down for curves as needed. Forward collision avoidance, blind spot collision avoidance, and an eye-watching driver attention warning are all offered, as is a new radar-based rear occupant alert that is meant to detect passengers left in the rear. It will even detect "small respiratory movements" meaning it can detect a sleeping infant left in a car seat. Genesis says it's the first vehicle to offer this feature.
The 2022 Genesis GV70 is expected to arrive here in the second half of 2021 with more details including trim and pricing to follow.
