Genesis GV70 Compact Luxury SUV Coming Soon

Genesis’ first-ever compact luxury crossover made its public debut today in the company’s home base of Seoul, South Korea, where a heavily camouflaged example of the car will undergo a months’ testing on the city’s roadways.

Despite being employed to disguise the car’s true appearance, Genesis says the bespoke G-Matrix camouflage – which was “inspired by the diffused reflection of light from precision-cut diamonds” – points to design details that will appear in the production version of GV70.

Passers-by who spot the camouflaged car in Seoul can scan a QR code on it to learn more about the G-Matrix pattern.

The supplied images of the camouflaged car show styling cues borrowed from Genesis’ GV80 mid-size SUV and the recently redesigned G80 and G90 sedans, like those models’ distinctive headlight and taillight treatments.

However, Genesis is not ready to reveal technical details of the GV70, except to confirm it will join the brand’s Canadian lineup to compete in the busy the upscale compact crossover category populated by the BMW X3, Acura RDX, Lexus NX, Lincoln Corsair, Mercedes-Benz GLC, and Audi Q3. We expect competitive performance to come with pricing that undercuts that of its German rivals, at least.

Base performance will likely come from a 2.0L turbo four-cylinder engine borrowed from the G70 sedan with about 250 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque and a 2.5L turbo four (from the GV80) is a likely candidate for an underhood upgrade with its 300 hp/311 lb-ft. Another possibility is the 3.3L turbocharged V6 that’s optional in the G70 with 365 hp/376 lb-ft.
